Rage - anyone else initially unimpressed?

This vid they don't seem to dissolve in

That was one of the many complaints about doom 3, everything seemed too sterile with the way the enemies burned up. Hopefully they stay around for at least a while.

How can they? Look at crysis 2 there is so little memory that you see ground debris being drawn in and popping up a short distance in front of you. With the best will in the world im sure they thought of it but it will have be been cut during the optimisation process.

Im referring more to the pc version where memory isn't as much of a constraint as consoles. Its very possible that some of these vids are the pc version played with a joypad, ben done with duke nukem and other games.

In the Playstation version of Doom they didn't disappear. :D Bullet holes that remain are another thing I like but don't always see. They usually vanish after a while. Sometimes after quite a long time.

Whats not to understand? Detail requires memory and processing cycles. Outdated hardware suffers greatly when you expect to see an increase in graphics etc. They have to streamline to make things smoother so trade offs are made. In a pc situation they would leave all the details but allow you to set low medium high details and ud just upgrade. Well consoles have fixed hardware and they are reaching limits that no amount of steamlining can fix.... sadly.

replied above.

This is something the engine has been designed from the ground up to work around, I'm just hoping that screenshot back along is from the console version or a work in progress, if the designers are getting slack with the development assets thats gonna suck for the PC version.

Based purely on looks I'd say it's "OK" - gameplay is everything though. And being id I'd expect some no-nonsense, old fashioned, deathmatch action.

Yeah sadly we dont have a confirmation if those videos are pc or console. Even so tho given this game is multiplatform and with how many people complain about minimum specs its possible that they went for a generic amount of detail so it would be not only more accessable but also would create a more universal cross platform experience. Thats not to say in the final version there might not be an uber detail setting for pc users tho. We'l just have to wait and see i guess.

One of the big driving forces in the development of the idtech5 (and 6) engine(s) has been to make the technical details and platform constraints invisible to the artists, etc. in theory they can go in paint the world as they like (in high detail) and the engine will adapt it on the fly to the target platform with a good level of efficency. In practise I suspect there will be manual quality assurance comparing the final output on each platform to the original vision.

A little detail on it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4ieFw2s7Fw

It looks great to me, I will be getting it. COULDN'T CARE LESS about the graphics, the gameplay looks great fun, and I know it will be because it's an id game.

<3 id software

The whole point of the new engine is to have as much detail in textures as you want without performance hits or ram usage

Yeah well crysis was supposed to do that and to a certain degree it did but you still saw texture popping amd slight lags as it loaded from hard drive constantly to replace textures constantly. Saying texture streaming will magicly solve the issue of a lack of memory is no good. Sure it can help but it gets to a point where you are saturating the pipelines constantly steaming textures and those lovely textures streamed or not are having a negative coefficient of performance. What we need is more memory, if streaming textures was ok then we would never buy gpus with more memory nor would we use ram we'd just run everything direct from our hard drives.

megatexture etc. is a little better with regards to popup but still if you move too quickly you will see lower res textures, missing incidental models, etc. briefly. On the PC it won't really be an issue tho.
