Hi there. i have an Adaptec 31605 raid card in my pc currently with 2 36gb raptor drives on raid 0. Today i have been given 3 more of these raptor drives and i was wondering if i can use 5 drives on raid 0 with no problems

Let me know

thanks

I don't think you'll see a marked performance increase with 5 drives over 2. I believe the sweet spot is 3 drives, after that you don't get much of an increase.

ok thanks. I was just wondering as the guy who gave the the hard drives said i may have problems with the stripe size and cluster size having 5 drives. i will try with 4, make an image then re-create the array with the 5th drive and see if it makes any diffrence

mmm, I have 5 drives and althought you dont burst anymore, you do get a better average read from the drives. However, I dont think spending the extra money on more drives is viable.

i havent spent a penny on the drives. i just bought the raid card. last nite i put the 3 drives on the raid card in my test rig, installed windows and HDTACH and got a burst speed of 520mbps and an average read speed of 173mbps. At the weekend i will bring my main rig down and try it with all 5 drives and let u know of the speeds of that

Just make sure the data's either backed up or is not critical... it only takes one to fail and copput.. all data gone.
