Raid 0: Which Hard Drive for OS

I'm going to get a Samsung F3 1TB drive, but I was wandering which should I install my OS/games/other files to?

My current hard drive which I would be using in the array would be a RaptorX 150GB, and although it has lower read and write speeds than the Samsung, it has a faster seek time, so I'm not sure which should have what data.

I don't think you understand what RAID0 actually does because what you're describing isn't RAID, it's simply 2 HDDs in the PC.

Leave your OS and anything you use regularly on the Raptor and put the rest on the Samsung.

RAID

RAID 0 is where you take two same size disks and create a logical disk that spans both of them. You get increased speed as you have double the amount of bandwidth available to the large logical disk.

think of it as a large bathtub where you have two taps - raid 0 means opening both at the same time, but there is no way to avoid the water mixing in the tub.

Raptors are still quick, even the sata1 150 versions. Keep you OS on that one for now.

Now if you meant to say you are getting two x F3 and going to RAID-0 them, then they may turn out to be quick initially, but even in Raid will eventually slow down as you add more and more data.

Oops, I was being a dumb***, ok, so two hard drives are what I'm going for, not RAID 0 (Could maybe get a second 1TB drive in the future).

So, keep the OS on the RaptorX, and leave everything else on the Samsung.

Another question, would it be possible/worth it to split the Samsung into two drives? and would this increase performance?

Sorry for all these noobie questions, this is the only hardware I haven't had too much experience in using or modifying

IIRC the Samsung's faster than the Raptor X anyway.

What's your budget? A Vertex 2 (OS) and a 1tb F3 (storage) is a great combination.

My budget as of now is £5 :P need to wait till I get paid before I think of putting more goodies into my computer, though if I were to go for an SSD, I would probably have to go for this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-008-PA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1427 It's a little cheaper than the Vertex 2, and does the same job :)

But till then, I'll take everyone's advice and use the RaptorX as the OS drive.

Ok, going to revive this thread, should be the last time.

I got some money over New Year, and have ordered another F3, so when both of them come, I will put them in RAID 0.

Is it possible to still use the RaptorX as the OS drive, or would I need to get rid of it? Sorry again for the questions, really not too clued up on HDDs :p

You could use the raptor as the OS drive but im 99% sure that 2 F3s in raid 0 are faster.

Otherwise you are using 2tb of space in raid0 as storage? Upto you. I'm not quiet sure what you are aiming to achieve here any more..

I have 2 F3s in raid 0 as my boot and games drive, i dont bother backing it all up, i do it maybe once a year and its all on steam anyway... so im not worried about losing data.

My windows 7 loads in about 25 seconds, its not SSD fast but its pretty nippy.

I've been very impressed with my F3s in raid 0 - not had a single problem in over a year of using them. Spot on for the money!

In terms of setup, go with Halk's suggestion. Looking at the benchmarks, the Raptor's access times are about half those of the F3, so it's a good choice for an OS drive. Use your F3s for games and documents.

If you've Ghost or something similar, you can always try it both ways and see which is faster for you.
