Hey. I suspect I know the answer, but has anyone tried this? If not I'll have to test it myself which will prove difficult but probably worthwhile.

The hope would be read and write speeds of the hard drive, seek times of the ssd. Any chance of this?

edit: perhaps someone tried raptor plus hard drive some time ago?

No, while it may work you'll be stuck with the mechanical drives performance over both and the space limitations of SSD. You may also end up with the mechanical throwing a wobbly if the SSD is a bad one with the pauses etc.

Did seem a bit of a long shot. Cheers for replying.
I'm sure it'll work, different sizes and different drives just doesn't matter. Had a nasty feeling it would run at the speed of the slowest member though, I'll add it to the list of useless things to do with raid. Thanks

Different sizes and drives don't matter, but you'll lose excess space on the larger drive unless your RAID controller can manage to sort it out. My impression is the HDD would continuously be playing catch-up and slowing the SSD down for writes, but for reads you might get the full potential of the SSD. Certainly I wouldn't bother doing it over nightly backups from SSD to HDD.

If you do it though, be sure to let us know the results!
