Raid 1 question

Sorry for being dumb but have never set up raid before.
I am going to raid 4 hard drives (raid 1) so does the operating system have to be installed on a seperate drive thats not part of the raid?

No matthew, it doesn't, when you set up the drives, and you go to install the OS, it just sees the RAID Array as a single volume, not four separate entities.

You set up your raid in the controller, nominating which drives are part of the array.

The controller handles it from there. I take it that the drives are all the same size? as if they're not, it will use the size of the smallest across all four discs.

You may want to look at a separate controller card as well for this, as four drives it will make a difference over two if you use the onboard controllers.

Have you thought about RAID 10 as you have 4 drives?

why are you going to raid1 four drives ?

is this for a critical work application ?

or back up ?
