One of my drives has just failed in my Raid 5 array. Luckily I listened and went with Raid 5 over the speedier Raid 0. :D

I right clicked the drive in the intel matrix storage console and marked the drive as normal, it's now rebuilding. I take it though that I should RMA the drive asap or can this happen for any other reason?

I was doing a lot of backing up over the network and defragging so probably thrashing the drives a lot for the last 5 hours, maybe it just got a bit hot?

Run some diagnostics on the drive (Hitachi Feature Tool) if you can on an array. If you RMA the drive and there is nothing wrong with it you will be out of action for a few weeks for no reason.

having a software raid 5 anything could have happened, chances are there's nothing wrong with the drive @ all.

I agree, it is worth noting when the problem happened, if it was whilst you were working on it probably means more than if it was marked as failed on boot up, this often happens with multiple drives on reboots where they have not had time to spin down/power down before coming on again. Have a look at the SMART output from the drive if you can.
