Looking to build a system with 4 raptor drives running in RAID 5, for little more reason that I want too.

Does anybody have any experience with Highpoint Rocket RAID 1640 card ? Would this card work in PCI-X configuration with a PCI-X system board such as the Asus P5WDG2-WS Pro ?

Would it be able to support a bootable RAID 5 disk set ?

Usually boot drives are mirrored rather than RAID5. The majority of large server deployments I've seen/spec'd run with mirrored OS boot drives then use RAID N depending on the requirements.

Looks ok btw.

Highpoint = software raid accelerated (not true hardware raid). Don't waste money on that when you can pick up a true hardware RAID card from an auction site for usually about £100 (especially if you don't mind PCI-X).

Okay well on reflection and looking at the market the Adaptec AAR-1420SA seems to be hardware accelerated ?

Means I would need to use RAID 10 instead of 5 but the loss of disk space wouldnt really be an issue.

As for as PCI-X over PCI-Express I am looking for a PCI-X solution primarily because I cant find a PCI-Express solution for a 4 port SATA II RAID card.

You aren't looking hard enough for PCI-E - they are quite a bit more expensive though. The Adaptec is indeed a very good card and can do RAID 5 too (EDIT - or so I thought)...

 it can't?!!?! - wow, I always thought it did...

Is it even hardware raid?!
