RAID and Vista

Hello chaps,

I've just been speaking to a company that makes computers to order and seeing if they could give me a deal on something. I was interested in having a RAID setup, but have been told that it does not run in VISTA due to there being no drivers. Is that true? Sounds a bit fishy to me.

Depends on what the exact spec is. They may be offering kit which simply doesn't have Vista drivers. If that's the case I'd be walking away because kit that obscure will cause all end of troubles.

Do you mean that the hard disks probably won't have drivers for Vista and RAID, or the overall package. Sounds a bit weird that they might not support it.

Basically the spec is

8800GT
Q6600 Processor
4gb 667ddr2 RAM
Asus P5N32-SLI Motherboard
500gb Sata 2 Hard Drive

For total of £719

I've no idea what the supplier is talking about but it sounds like they don't know what they're doing. The parts mentioned above will quite happily run Vista and there are SATA controller drivers available to run RAID under Vista should you wish to (and add another disk).

On a side issue though, do you have a need to run SLI? That board is pretty old tech and unless you need SLI there are better Intel P35 based boards out there.

I really can't decide between sli or not. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've spec'ed a single GPU system, but i've been reading some stuff about performance regarding GPU and it improving when they are SLI'd. I was thinking this would be better for the future and maybe getting one 8800gt card now and then getting another later down the line. Also means that i wouldn't ahve to change my motherboard is SLI does become the next big thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated with this as its starting to do my head in and I just want to get my order in! :)

You'll get better replies on the pros and cons of SLI etc in the other sub-forums but as far as I'm aware (as a non gamer) SLI is really only required if you want crazy frame rates at very high resolutions so unless you're planning on a 24"+ screen I'd say it's unnecessary.

Just been playing Crysis demo on my new comp with a 22" WS (1680x1050) and on full settings its a bit choppy. I can play ok but I wanted it to be smooth :(

E6750
4GB PC2 6400
P5K-E Wifi
8800GT
2x 500gb Seagates RAID 1

Oh and I am running Vista 64
