RAID/Backup Help

I want 2 x 1TB HDD's, one for my data and the other purely for backup. Whats the best way to do this, RAID? How do I set this up?
Im going to be building my rig from scratch and its the first time doing so but I think I will be ok.

RAID 1 - mirror

Should be able to set this up when the pc boots if your mobo has raid. I think i press N or something on my asus board.

not unless your mobo doesnt support raid and then you would need a separate card.

its the best time to set it up with a new build as setting up raid will wipe the drives during the process

RAID1 is not a backup it's an availability solution.

Run one disk in the PC as normal, put the other in an external caddy and use Synctoy or the like to backup the internal one to the external one.

you would have 2 drives with exactly the same contents including the os.

Why do I have to put it in an external caddy?
