how can you tell what RAID config a server is using without going in to the BIOS or RAID config utility?

basically I am wanting to get some stats on our servers, but cant be restarting them.

Depends on the RAID controller surely? Some install a plugin in the Control Panel which shows basic info, worth checking for that.

Failing that the only other way I can think of is to open the machine up and look at the capacities on the drive labels, total them, and compare them to the capaicty available in Windows. From this it should be reasonably obvious if it's RAID0/1/5.

No doubt someone will be along in a minute with a much simpler technique but I thought I'd chuck this idea in anyway, at least it's pretty bulletproof :p

Hope this helps :)

Most hardware vendors have system managemant apps that you install and can tell you (and allow you to configure, and monitor) what's going on.

HP/Compaq Insight manager and Dell Openmanage, to name two.

I dont use servers, so this maybe completely useless but if i go into device manager on my PC and look at my disk drives i get this

SCSI\DISK&VEN_PROMISE&PROD_2+0_STRIPE/RAID0&REV_1.10\5&11D7DDFD&0&000

in device manager, when i go to my nvidia driver detials in device manager

the bus relations dropdown says "nvidia stripe" which means raid 0
