Which would people recommend from the following two

Seagte Barracuda ES.2 500Gb

or

Western Digital Caviar RE2-GP 500Gb

I am particulary interested in the lower power consumption and sound as will be using 4 in a RAID5 running 24/7

Personally I'd avoid both. The Seagate is just a 7200.11 with some minor tweaks and a hike in the price tag, the normal .11 is more than sufficient. I'm also not convinced by the WD GP drives, sure the power consumption is down (but on a 4 disk array you're only going to save about 20W tops which in monetary terms is pence per week) but I've heard the performance suffers as a result.

Seagate have seen regular .10 and .11 disks drop out of an array which is why looking to use the RAID variants due to the the disk checking.

There will also be 3 servers so a total of 1 disks, and a Media Server which looking to populate with 1Tb versions increasing the disks as and when. Will end up with 16 disks in the end.

I have looked at the performance and the performance is still acceptable to me for the GP versions, as will be VMWare at home.
