Using a basic 2 disk RAID1 setup
with 2 different sized disks, can the larger disk be partitioned such that the extra capacity be used as a stand alone partition alongside the RAID setup ?

James.

Depends on what type of RAID we're talking about. If it's fake RAID (which if you don't otherwise it most likely is), then the answer is probably not. Other kinds of RAID (e.g. mdadm software RAID in Linux) can do so though.

no mate im pretty sure it cant.....if the drives are not the same size say one 100gb and one 120gb it will raid them at 200gb and 20gb will be lost

I think it may well work. I've short stroked hard drives and put them in RAID 0 before, and formated the remaining space as another partition.

I'm assuming you're using Intel Matrix Storage. Format two drives as RAID 1 with size of the smallest drive. Then in either in Windows disk management or using something like Gparted, you should be able to see the remaining 'unallocated space' and create a drive out of it.

Might have been worth mentioning the OS will be FREENAS and it is software RAID.
I already have a 1.5TB drive full of data.
I want to purchase a 2TB drive.
I am fairly sure (some clarification would be good here) that I will have to wipe both drives to create the RAID array will I not ?
