okay so here's the dealio at the moment i have
a MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) to which is attached
1. 120gb SSD as system drive (sata3)
2. 60gb SSD (sata3) was first used as Intel Smart Response cache but after going through 2 of the 120gb Corsair Force Series GT I stopped using it as a cache and now just as another drive for office, creative suite etc.
3. 2tb HDD as games drive and usual day to day stuff, downloads, projects etc.
4. 1tb HDD as random storage drive
5. 2 2tb HDD in a RAID1 array (set up within windows) used for tv, film and music these are attached to the marvell controller on the mobo

So I'm running low on the RAID1 array and thinking of switching a few things up
I would like to increase more space by adding another 2tb drive and switching to RAID5

so as i understand it I would need something like:

Lian Li IB-01B PCI-Express 5-Port SATA-II & 1-Port e-SATA RAID Controller [IB-01B]

or

Highpoint RocketRAID Low Profile Card - RR2640x4SGL

now were i to install one of these cards how would I go about making sure my data was safe during the transition from raid1 to raid5?

Which of the 2 cards would be recommended for me?

Anyone have any suggestions for how better to do this or am i on the right track?
cheers

Why don't you just use you motherboard to create the raid 5 array ?, you will need to back up all your data before moving from your raid 1 to raid 5 array as it will wipe the drives while creating the array.

When you have the raid 5 array set up you can add extra disks to make the array bigger without wiping the drives but not while its setting it up for the first time.

Your post says you have 5 hard drives connected at the moment ?, that motherboard has 8 sata ports ?

plus dvd drive and card reader thingamagig with esata port on the front
so one free sata2 port
so that would involve mixing the z68 and marvell controller as well as sata2 and sata3? is that even possible?
