RAID questions.

Okay so I just read the FAQ/Sticky, and I guess my options are RAID 1+0 or RAID 0+1.
Can somebody explain these to me slightly more simply than what is in the sticky and tell me whether I need a controller card?
I'm going to be doing lots of recording and storing lots of data, basically I want reliability, capacity, and speed.
 
To do RAID10 or 0+1 you need 4 identical disks, you can't mirror a RAID0 array onto a single drive. If you set up the 2 500Gb disks in RAID0 you can then use Synctoy or the like to do regular backups of critical data to the 1Tb disk.
 
Those adaptec cards are not even worth bothering with. It might look like a hardware controller, but its still software raid.

Do some googling and youll find out that the Adaptec "HostRAID" feature they advertise, is actually software raid implementation.

For proper hardware raid you would be better off spending 100+ on a PERC opr 3Ware card.
