hi all

im just after a little advice on raid setup please. i understand what raid and the different types are etc, but ive never actually gone through the process of setting it up.

at work we ordered a dell precision t5500 workstation with
'optional PCI-e SAS 6/ir controller supports SAS drives with host based RAID 0 or 1'
as well as 2x Seagate 2tb 7200 drives and im assigned to setting it up, so im doing a little rearch over the weekend.

the system currently has a 300gb hd with win7 pre installed, it is going to be used for media production, video editing etc

i want the 300gb to remain as the operating system drive, with just the necessary programs installed, and the 2x 2tb to be raided seperately in raid1 for data redundancy. these drives will store all of the work & project related files, video footage etc.

is there a guide to familiarise myself with the exact steps to achieve this please? or is it relatively simple, activate raid in bios, walk through the raid setup steps etc?

thanks in advance

Added a RAID array to an working system is probably the easiest way to do it.
Here is how:

1) Install the RAID drivers if they are not already installed
2) Restart the machine and enter the RAID BIOS (CTRL-I maybe? It is on the PERC 6/i but it should flash up on screen)
3) Create a RAID1 array - this will be something along the lines of Create Array, select RAID1 and include the 2x 2TB drives drives save and initialise the array.
4) Go back into Windows and after a short period of time (a few minutes) you should be able to pop into Disk Administrator and find a fresh uninitialised 2TB drive. Initialise and format it and Robert's your Dad's brother.

You could get the management software installed and create the array in Windows too, but personally I've had 1 or 2 issues with doing it that way (albeit with a Perc 5/i and Perc6/i running a RAID5 array) so I prefer to do it from the card BIOS. All subsequent array operation can be done fine from the management software
