with raid do the drives have to be the same model numbers or just the same size.

There doesn't have to be anything the same for Raid but the closer you can match the drives the better as it is one less thing to go wrong so to speak. If you are looking at Raid0 then you will only be able to stripe to 2x the size of the smallest drive and for Raid1 you will only be able to mirror the size of the smallest drive.
