well ive just bought 3 of these Western Digital Caviar SE WD400BD reconditioned drives for £21 inc, they are too be used in a raid0 setup.
so what do you guys think my performance will be like ?

im not ive got a 320gb drive for all my files and a 160gb backup drive for the mosst important stuff, those 3 are just for the os and apps

so what do you guys think my performance will be like ?
I'm not convinced it'll be that great. The WD400BD is a pretty old drive (it's SATA150) so the sustained transfer rate won't be spectacular, the WD800 which replaced it only manages about 35MB/s. As a result even 3 in RAID0 are unlikely to get close to a single current generation HDD.

well they arrived today so i thought i may aswell try them out, set them up in raid 0 and installed vista ultimate x64. once all drivers were instaklled i benchmarked them with hd tune
results were
min transfer 30mb/s
max transfer 166.3mb/s
average transfer132 mb/s
average seek time 13.2ms

vs my old hdd which scored
min transfer 8mb/s
max transfer 113.6mb/s
average transfer 89.4 mb/s
average seek time 16.7ms

another additional benefit is that i can open photoshop in under two seconds:D

Looks like you got a nice performance boost there then matey,

What stripe size did you go for?

It is possible to wring more performance, by testing different stripe sizes and seeing what works best for you.

If your working with large files then a large stripe size is best.
If your working with small files then a small size is better.

As an os drive xp, vista, it can be beneficial to use a small stripe size, but there are downsides. The drive will fragment a lot quicker.

im using 16k stripe size as they are only really for os and i dont really mind having to defrag everynow and then
