Just build my new pc, is raid1 one worth it, The redundency will be good but are there any benefits with read times?

I only ask as i've done it and using 2 7200.8's and the results from hd tach are awful.

what should i be expecting?

yeah they're quite old now, still i though they were better than 45mb/s. especially is raid1. Something tells me they should be at around 70mb/s. Also despite being a few years old they're still the silent/reliable drives i've ever had.

I have just bought 2 new F1' storage drives but was hoping these would perform better in raid1.

45Mb/s is about right for 7200.8s, remember they're 4+ year old technology.

The Intel controllers can do split seeks but that only helps on random accesses, your sustained rate is limited to that of a single drive.

make sure that the cache is enabled in the driver, on intel boards this means using the intel matix manager software, as they are disabled by default.

You won't see any benefits in speed by using RAID1. All that does is mirror the data to two drives. It doesn't read the data from both drives too.

imo raid1 is pointless for a home user, just use raid0 or a single drive

take a weekly acronis image, and robocopy your files daily to another drive

Yes it does, providing split seek is support then read speed should theoretically improve the move disks you add.

Why do that when i could just have a raid1 setup and forget about it. Also, I do a lot of work remotely and wouldn't want to lose even a days work should my primary drive fail.

I can see what you're saying but i'm a bit weiry at the moment as i think i have a F1 on its way out. ;)
