Ram at wrong speed?

Tis normal. PC2-8500 doesn't officially exist. It's just great overclocking PC2-6400.

You'll need to set the 1066mhz speed and 2.2v voltage manually in your BIOS (and probably the 5-5-5-15 timings too).

Well the pc is slightly oc'd and currently have these settings

dram freq : 367
FSB:DRAM 1:1
and I did set the 5-5-5-15 timings

in cpu-z it has the "timings table" and under EPP#2 it has freq 533 and then my 5 5 5 15 timings with 2.2v. Is 2.2 needed then?

2.2v will be needed if you raise the memory up to its 1066mhz speed (or 533mhz in CPU-Z).

A noobish question...
If I have a set of dual channel Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC8500's, should I in theory be able to get a DRAM frquency of 1066 MHz in the Bios at the rated timings, if I pump the Vdimm to 2.2 V as per manufacturer's recommendation?

Thanks Cob

Hmmm

This is giving me real concern. If I drop the multiplier of the CPU to say 7 and pump the FSB up to 390 Mhz (thus cpu clock @ 2730 MHz, which is well within my Q6600's limits) with the cpu:ram divider at 1:1 (thus RAM @ 780 MHz) and timings of 5-5-5-15, it shouldn't have any trouble booting up? Me thinks that these Crucial stix might be a little dodgy...

Vdimm @ 2.2V
Vcore @ 1.4V
MCH @ ICHO a little up from standard

It should definately boot at 780mhz 5-5-5-15. It should do it at 4-4-4-12 too.

Have you tried keeping the CPU fsb at 266mhz and running the memory at 1066mhz on the 1:2 ratio?

Thanks....

That is the next step...but I'm trying to check the max clock I can get the CPU first.
Seems to be stable @ 3.2 (8 x 400) and cpu:ram @ 1:1.

Temps on uGuru are quite high though 70, although core temp reporting temps of 59. Any idea which of these I should trust...

If it is running this hot I might plug in the watercooling system....

Is that 59c at idle or under load?

I would use CoreTemp. It's pretty much the standard tool, so you'll have plenty of chances to compare your temps with other Q6600s.

Cob, those temps ares under full load running Prime95.

I've just tried the RAM at 1:2 divider with FSB @ 266, but no positive boot. LED's flicker and fans spin for approx 1 sec and then a bleep...repeat a couple of times and then reboot's to defaul BIOS settings. Pretty sure something is not quite right with the stix...

Idle temp with CoreTemp is approx 36 - 37 C.

Any suggestions for new memory? How good is the 2 x 2GB Corsair Dominator PC8500 1066 MHz kit? Any known issues?

Is the Command Rate set to 2T? If so, then try setting the timings to Auto. If that doesn't work then try each stick on their own.

If it is faulty then Crucial in Scotland will replace them within 7 days. They've an awesome returns service. Tho ofcourse you will have to return both sticks.

Command rate is on auto, but I assume it is 2T. Will set it at 2 though.

With regards to the rest of the timings if it cannot do the 5-5-5-15 as specified, then imho they are not up to spec, thus require replacement.

Thanks for all the help...

No problem.

You can apply for an RMA number for warranty replacement from Crucial by going here. I would strongly advise dealing with them direct rather than sending them back to the retailer (unless ofcourse you wish to swap them for a different brand).

Thanks...but bought from OC'ers and I think I should be able to exchange for different memory...been reading to many negative comments re the Crucial Ballistix Tracers on the net.
