Quick one really.

My desktop which I built four years ago now, has OCZ Vista Upgrade Gold Series 4GB (2 X 2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel DDR2 ram in it running on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R DDR2 motherboard.

I would like to up the ram to 8GB but can't see any PC2-5400C5 ram available on the overlockers retail site.

So.... can I use PC2-5300C4/C5 or PC2-6400C5/C6 or PC2-8500C5 and what might the implications (if any) be?

Advice gratefully received!

:)

PC2-5300 and PC2-5400 are basically the same thing.

Strictly they should both be called PC2-5333 so it just depend how the number's been rounded.

They both run at 667MHz.

If you're adding RAM to your existing setup then you need DIMMs that match as closely as possible what you already have as they all have to run at the same speed using the same timings and voltage.

If you get RAM with different specs. then you'll have to find settings that the different types of RAM will both run at.

I assume you have a 64 bit version of Windows as you'll need that to use more than 4GB.

Thanks Surveyor, running 64-Bit Linux and need more ram for virtual machines.

I'll get the PC2-5300.
