so, just playing a bit of subnautica, tabbed out to browse on here and i'm greeted with a "close apps to prevent memory loss" message.

turns out, task manager is registering only 8gb with 1 slot used when there's been 2 8gb sticks in and working for the past 4+ years

so is it possible it's died? pc has definately not been moved any time recently so i can't see it being a dislodged connection.

it's a 990fx sabertooth running GEIL 8gb 1600mhz ddr3, cpu is clocked but the ram isn't and being in a 540 case i can't see cooling being the issue.

will pull her apart tomorrow when i get the time and swap the sticks over see if that makes a difference.

You've probably answered your own question if you suddenly went from having 16 to 8 :) Surprised that it didn't kill Windows though, guessing you booted with 8 and only noticed it later.

The plot thickens, didnt get the chance to pull her apart so booted her up and back to normal service, 2 sticks, 16gb.

No idea what went wrong but im glad its ok, cars been playing up and i dont exactly have the funds to go spending on the pc

I have a hunch that's going to peg out on you again some time in the future, tbh. Would be wise to start planning either a replacement, or upgrade :)

Same, she's long overdue a core overhaul (been on the books since haswell e came out) but right now she's going to have to wait while my car decides how much money it wants to skin me this year.

Worst comes to it 8gb is livable, but not ideal.
