Hi there guys, i am new to this forum and newbee in the pc overclocking ,i recently upgrade my ram (corsair xms ddr3 1333mhz) from 4 gb to 8 gb , but as i have window 7 32 bit installed it will only recognize 3.25 of them wich is a waste. Now i use all this ram for gaming, and my question is simple does anyone know if it is after all better to do a clean install of window 7 but 64 bit or there is any other way to get around this, and be able to use all my ram. program like window superfetch does not seam to be usefull to me as i will not be able to use the full amount on gaming.
Thank you to any answer.
Antec 300
8gb corsair 1333mhz xms
amd phenom II x4 955 3.2

You will need to install 64bit version on Windows 7 to recognise any more that 3.25GB Ram. 32-bit simply cannot access more than that amount so there's no way round it unfortunately.

thank you ery much , it will take me week looool. but yes seam the only way.
Is amazing do that it recognize only 3.25 , ok is stability issue but ,a new os with all this new app, they would have tought to allow more ram . ha well

I think the 3.25GB limit has something to do with it needing to allow for the memory on the graphics card as well (The actual 32-bit limit is 4GB). Reinstalling software is the one thing I absolutely hate doing so do feel for you!

I've just had to reinstall Windows on my laptop because I'm upgrading from 1GB Ram (Win7 32bit) to 8GB.

Yeah, the 4GB limit isn't a Windows issue it's the limit for any 32-bit Operating system as far as I'm aware. It's the limit you get when you do 2^32 (2 because it's binary and 32 as it's 32 bit OS), I think.
So there's nothing Microsoft can really do other than provide you with a 64-bit OS, which I believe they do in the same pack as the 32-bit one. After that it's your choice.

thank you both guys. i will slowly start to put back 180 gb of stuff , lol but then i will have a bit more power do , instead of the berely 3.25 a full 8 gb will be worth it.
Thank you again , hope to see you soon.

Yup - 2^32 gives a 32bit OS just over 4GB of addressable locations. But once the system has allocated all the hardware address space, you typically end up with just 3.25GB worth of locations left to address the system RAM. The other 0.75GB is forever innaccessible to the system - until you put a 64bit OS on of course :)

thank you again for the clear explanation. i am in the process of saving all my stuff and the start the clean reinstall, i think after this i will see e clear difference on my pc, i always tought that it was running under capacity but onestly ignoring the 32 bit system i alway tought was the internet provider, poor people, i drive them mad. I will post again , as soon as i finish my reinstall next week , what are the first impression.
Thanks
Paolo

If Internet speed is your problem a 64bit OS and more RAM isn't going to make any difference.

hi there.
At the moment i have 8 m download, the provider is vodafone, not one of the best but where i live in the Irish countryside is the best, yes they do have pretty bad modem , home gateaway , but i dont have big huge problem ,well of course i will like a 30m download but... my ping is around 90 ms ,usually sometime less sometime more. i was thinking on buy a better modem but did not do it yet ,in the mean time a upgrade my ram since i use a lot on gaming, i think is there where i will see a bit of difference do .
my spech
phenomIIx4 955 3.2 ghz not overcloked i am a neewbie on that even do i found a small program for msi my mobo 770 c45 for overclocking with stability.
8gb corsair xms 1333mhz.
assus geforce gts 250 512 mb
ocz 700 psu.
Is probably not the best but i build it bit by bit, no much money all togheter.

If you're a gamer then using 4gb with a 64 bit OS is enough. I would have thought upgrading the GPU would have been a much better move...

hey there thank you both for the answer.
Orcvader: Yes probably is something to do before all the rest but i did in order to have the biggest expense at the end when i have more time to save what you would reccomend with my spech .?

j.col : Hi there as you can see i am not really Irish , i am actually from Itlay but living here in limerick and county for the last 11 year so i am a bit irish? , thank you for that link i think i will start to do some overclocking in a wile , for the rest i keep you informed on the irish new as you can see we are scr....d , but they say" it will getting better, dont you fell the same.?

Highly recommend overclocking the CPU via BIOS, it's much better and stable doing it that way :).

Replacing the 250 with a 460 1gb or better is a good move depending on your budget, maybe extending to the 560 Ti/6950 if possible.

Also are you running 2x4gb or 4x2gb RAM? Four sticks of RAM can limit your overclock as it will strain the memory controller.

hi .
I do run a 4x2 did not found a 4 gb full for the xms ddr3 , i am using a small program do at the moment called owerclocking centre that msi released for my motherboard 770c45, it allow you to have advance feature so you can touch a bit from there, the motherboard is not the top but it does is job so far till it goes then will see. i will check for the new graphic card do pretty soon, thank you for that .

The architecture allows it, but Microsoft only allows > 4GB in some of their server systems.
