RAM or CPU speed, which is better?

1: Not incredibly expensive and is also a good investment
2: It can be but just like anything to do with computers once you understand the theory/basics its easy
3: If you are careful it needn't be disasterous.
4: Allows you to get supreme overclocks at nice temperatures at low volume.
5: Get better :p

Heh, I am someone who wants to try watercooling so I need to make sure I can justify it to myself :D

lol, was wondering half way through your post who you were trying to convince :p Just reading a thread and review about the Corsair Nautilous or what ever its called, that might be something i would be interested in to start off with. Right up my street... simple, no hassle! Depends how much it would cost over here though, and anyway need a new mobo (apparently ;) ) before i can even think about a decent OC on water! :)

Yeah i realise its a bit of a noobish option, but looks like a good place to start and build confidence. Yes, well you have convinced me to upgrade my board, and by the looks of it you have sown the seed of thought on the WC front too lol... not that I needed much convincing.

Are there any other complete kits (like the Corsair unit) out there which you would recommend then Sirius? Just i havent the first clue, shall scour the forums for info on water cooling, lol, so much to learn!

Dam this thread and its wallet sapping abilities :D

I don't know much about the kits cos I dont intend to get one - bit more daring than you :p

However I do know that Thermaltake kits should be avoided like the plague! Just nosey around the rest of this forum and check out the stickies! It is what I did.

I would be more daring if i had a back up PC lol, however just sold it (hence my recent 19" WS tft & 1800XT :D )so my precious rig is very much my only crutch for my addiction, that and i'm some what a chicken when i'm looking at many hours 'awful' work so i could afford it in the first place.

Anyway, will check out the stickies and trawl the forums as you say... will probably/hopefully learn enough to steer away from the kits. They are fugly though, WC setups i mean.

Bad WC setups can be ugly, but if it is done well with a bit of flair it can look awesome!

I suspect I will be spending a fair bit of money getting my PC just right!

Tell me about it, lost a lovely Tbird 1Ghz AXIA at 1.6Ghz and KT7A a few yrs back when my homebrew WC got bumped into by a drunk mate, total loss, water everywhere, Radeon 64Mb DDR VIVO dead, KT7A dead, Deathstar 40Gb dead, 24x burner dead, 512MB SDR - survived!, Sblive dead.. gah memory of that gutted me! lol Never got paid back in full, maybe 60% and haven't seen the idiot in a few yrs.

More than likely is.. 2005 after all, as for the mobo ---> Asrock Dual SATA2 939, and yeah i know im probably asking too much from a cheap board. Just that on the thread for that board generally the clocks achieved are pretty good, just does not like an FSB above 241 lol, no matter what multi or divider. Link speeds make no difference either, the only thing i could think it would be is the lack of power, i can only get 1.4V in the BIOS max, and dont really want to volt mod. Well i guess its at its limit for this rig... will have to stop trying now lol

Naah, should'nt stop you much really. Turn off c&q and increase volt to 1.4V. Or do a voltmod and up it to 1.55V

Well C&Q has been off since day one, and 1.4V already, guessing a volt mod would be the only stop left. Got to find which BIOS is best then

EDIT: Actually i cant help but think my RAM might be a bit flaky, it used to fail memtest, but changing the timings made it memtest stable, that doesn't mean its stable (not to me anyway) though. Only way i could tell is trying some new RAM, afaik. Could RAM be the reason for my failed clocks?

I've tested my 6600 + Gskill 6400 HZ at various speeds and I've found in benchmarks it's definately preferable to run @ low ram speeds 1:1 with the cpu. Ive had the ram @ 1000mhz 4-4-4-12 and 667 @ 3-3-3-8 and the lower ram speed outperforms the PC2 8000 speeds in a big way.

Currently running ram @ 713mhz 3-3-3-8-3 this is faster than running it @ 800-1000mhz
