I've pretty much decided to upgrade my Phenom x2 550BE CPU (in sig) to a Phenom x4 955BE. I've also just replaced my HD4870 with an HD5850.

My memory is 4GB Patriot Viper DDR2 6400 (800mhz) bought from here nearly 2 years ago. My motherboard only supports DDR2, up to 16GB. Will my DDR2 perform noticeably worse than DDR3 memory, or not much difference?

Not noticeably.. I had an Asus P5KC running 4GB of DDR2. A customer bought some DDR3modules so before i upgraded their machine, I tried them (naughty). I ran few benchmarks and results weren't nothing to write home about. The DDR3 did just slightly come out on top but very marginally. I would have expected slightly higher performance due to the increased memory frequencies. However, I was never overly convinced at the combi-memory controller on this board. It wasn't worth an upgrade then.

I always used to get them mixed up when i was younger - now i blame age...

Congrats, I can't think of a more deserving or dedicated member!

Thanks Admiral Huddy, good to hear that I've no need to rush out and change my motherboard.
