Ram speed issue.

I have recently got some Kingston HyperX PC-8500 ram. I have an Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard with all the settings set to Auto.

The issue I have is that when checking the RAM in CPU-Z it is being seen as PC-6400 and is therefore running at 800 Mhz rather than 1066 Mhz.

Shouldn't it run at the correct speed without me setting it manually in the BIOS?

PC 8500 ram is basically OC'd PC 6400 ram. some brands come pre clocked while others leave it for u to OC.

i guess with your kit your just gonna have to do it yourself. i just bought some PC 8500 RAM myself but ive been unlucky in that the ram wont run stable at the speed it was advertised.

im returning it today, hopefully the new stuff will work this time.

I tried setting it to DD2 - 1066 Mhz and 2.20v in the bios. However this causes BSOD's during boot up or soon after logging in and launching CPU-Z. I also tried setting the timings to 5-5-5-15 with the other parameters left on auto.

The only way to get the pc stable again is to leave everything in the BIOS at Auto which only gives me RAM running at 800 Mhz.

Id be careful with setting ram voltage on the p5q deluxe, depending on bios revision theyre rumoured to overvolt ram by quite a lot, on mine i was running ocz reaper pc8500 rated at 2.1v, i set it manually to 2.02 and it ran fine, also had to do the same with a previous set of pc6400 reaper, also rated at 2.1v.

Other than the voltage what setting did you set to get the PC8500 ram to run at the correct speed of 1066 as at the moment with everything on auto it is running as PC6400.

On my board with everything on auto, the only thing i had to set was the voltage, timings defaulted to 5-5-5-15 automatically, btw are you using 4 gb or 8gb? If 8gb you may also have to up the NB voltage a notch or two.

It is 4 Gb of Kingston Hyper X PC-8500. I have taken out all the cruical ballistix as it is causing instabilities latley. Even though the Kingston is not running at 1066 my system has been 100% Stable.

It would seem with this new RAM that running everything at auto is not running it at the correct speed.

99% of DDR2-1066 RAM needs the speed to be manually adusted in the BIOS :)

On the Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard the one single BIOS setting you must change is DDR2 Frequency from [Auto] to [DDR2-1066], the timings don't need adjusting and the voltages were fine on [Auto] with the two sets I owned, I eventually found they ran fine using just 1.80vDimm although this may vary according to batch!

If your set of memory doesn't work properly when running at DDR2-1066 (even with boosted voltage) then something is wrong, try running one stick at a time and get it running memtest from a bootable CD . .

Right so far I have run Memtest86 at 800 Mhz passes with no errors. If I change the speed to 1066 Mhz I get a load of errors in test 5.

I guess I need to run it with just each stick on its own to see if one or both have an issue.

Right I have tested both sticks on their own, my findings are:

Stick 1:

800 mhz Auto with Auto voltage is ok
1066 mhz with Auto voltage errors seen in Memtest86
1066 mhz with 2.20 v manually set is ok

Stick 2:

800 mhz Auto with Auto voltage is ok
1066 mhz with Auto voltage errors seen in Memtest86
1066 mhz with 2.20 v manually errors seen in Memtest86
