RAM timings

Hi all,

I built my new PC last June and its been running very well for the most part. I've had approx 6-8 BSODS in the time, mostly after first built (memory management error for all but one, which was an IRQ not equal or less or some such), until I set the XMP profile in the bios then I've only had one recently since (hence me checking my timings).

I've not bothered to look in to it much as I've been busy with work/college work and when I get any free time I game and I've never had a problem during gaming sessions. Any way, I noticed that on CPU-Z the ram timings are incorrect from what they should be set to from the XMP profile.

I've had a look in the bios and figured out where I need to set most of them, but in manual mode there are lots and lots of other settings that I can fiddle with. Do I just leave these all to auto and only adjust the ones below?

I have never needed to fiddle with RAM timings in the past so its quite new to me.

Looks like it's running at the XMP-2400 profile plus some 'performance enhance' setting that your motherboard has applied. Usually tucked away in the RAM/CPU options with wording like Standard, Turbo, Extreme or some such bull. The ram should be running at 1.65V in this case too. You might wanna check that and maybe run Memtest or the Windows Memory Diagnostic.

I've set the first 4 timings manually (can't find the tRFC?) but it has changed them back to 11-13-13-35 when I boot in to windows and check with CPU-Z. I've rebooted and checked to make sure they have saved and they are deffo save.

What am I doing wrong?

*edit*

Thanks vashiro. I did spot that option and it was set to disabled I am certain. I will reboot now and double check though.

Hmm I can't see anything obvious. 'memory overclocker profile' is disabled. I have the Intel 'Turbo Boost' enabled, but that is just for CPU only I think? Hopefully some one with the same board as me (Gigabyte Z97X-SLI) can maybe help more.

Hi 8 Pack,

Many thanks for the reply. This is what I have set in the BIOS and CPU-Z is still showing 11-13-13-35-314-2T. I double checked the settings have been saved.

P.S although not shown below, the DRAM voltage has been set to 1.66V (no option of 1.65V available).

Try 11-15-15 then man. See if its changing at all.

Why not enable XMP also.

Very strange. I have tried 11-15-15 and it still shows up as 11-13-13 in CPU-Z.

With XMP enabled, I get exactly the same timings (hence trying to set them manually).

I'll have another good look around in the BIOS when I get back from work, if any one else has any bright ideas or know what might be causing my issue it would be greatly appreciated!

*edit* Went back in to the bios to set the XMP profile again instead of leaving my manual settings. I set the manual bits back to auto, enabled XMP then the PC wouldn't boot, just kept attempting to boot. I had to clear CMOS (luckilly had a jumper to hand). I have set the XMP profile again and it was fine this time so not sure if I messed something up. The ram timings are still showing 11-13-13 in CPU though! grr.

Hello again,

I had another BSOD on Friday (I think), so almost 4 weeks since the last. The BSOD was 'PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA'. This happened whilst surfing.

I've tried increasing my memory voltage to 1.68v (rated at 1.65V, and already tried 1.66V).

No matter what I do in the bios, I cannot get the RAM to run at its rated timings. I have set them manually to 11-14-14-35, but it shows as 11-13-13-35 in CPU-Z. What on earth is going on? Is there anything else I can try to get my RAM to run at its rated timings?

P.S it runs at the incorrect times of 11-13-13-35 when the XMP profile is set.

Any help appreciated.

Download Mem Tweak it and check timings in Windows using that. Maybe CPU Z reading incorrectly.

You can push higher mem volts also like 1.7-1.75 no problem.

Hi 8 Pack, thanks again for the reply. I have checked with Mem TweakIt and get the same results.

I did also try using the new GUI bios instead of the legacy one that I was using and it's the same.

I didn't know I could push the volts up so much, thanks for the heads up!
