hey, i'm getting some new ram for my laptop (asus a6k, turion 64, 512 ram, gf 6200 gfx) and i would like some advice on which ram to buy and what difference it will make.

The only ram i've been able to find has been the value select range (seems to be generic but with different branding). At the mo i'm just going to upgrade from 512 to 1 gb but want to add another gig in a few months (birthday). I'd rather get some decent stuff rather than the cheaper ones but i cant find any!! is there a reason for this? as far as i know my laptop can take any 2700 200pin sodim.

Could anyone give my any specific advice on choosing decent ram for my system and what the general improvements will be after the upgrade.

many thanks folks!!

This isn't exactly a question everyone can answer, so waiting more than 24 hours might have been a good idea.

Using cpu-z (or similar) you can find the timings of what is already in the notebook, although if this is removable and you plan to replace it in a couple of months this may be a waste of time. If its fixed there is no point finding faster to add to it as it will run at the speed of the slowest stick. As to whether better timings make a difference - it should be the same as a desktop. Tighter timings = more bandwidth, which is never a bad thing :)

Having looked around (as you likely have) I can find no performance RAM for notebooks. You could try buying some pc3200 and hoping it has tighter spd timings for pc2700 mode, but this is a bit of a gamble. I would e-mail the manufacturer of any stick(s) you were thinking of buying to check if it does have pc2700 spd in it before buying.

Hope that helps,

thanks, i've already e-mailed asus and am waiting for a response so fingers crossed on that one. unless asus tell me otherwise i guess i'm just going to have to settle for the general stuff. i've seen some pretty tasty stuff on a web site -(Crucial 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz 200pin SODIMM for notebooks) but like you say unless asus let me know if it works on my laptop it would be risky. corsair value select is the likey candidate.

anyone else have any ideas??
