Unfortunately, I'm going to Gambia on tuesday and forgot about ramadan. Last year I was in Tunisia (working) and it was impossible to find food during the day... Hoping it's not going to be the same this year...

At least the sun sets earlier now. I remember my ex-housemate throwing in the towel when it was the height of summer.

Muslims go without food and water (and cigarettes? Think it's anything that passes their lips) from sunrise until sunset, then they can eat and drink as much as they want during the night.
Must be pretty easy in the UK, especially if you're office based, Get up at 5 and have a big breakfast, fast all day in your office, then have a big dinner at 9-10ish.
Desert however it's a nightmare. Apparently muslim countries get a lot more fights and arguments during Ramadan as tempers get freyed far easier.
You go out and get lathered, so why bother with this?

Thats what I don't understand, putting you job and safety before a religion?
Is it about temptation? as Lent is about giving up something, Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.
No, he's posted quite a few times about going out and getting very drunk and also doing silly things when drunk. I just thought it was rather bizarre that he can quite happily brag about not following that particular tenet and yet claim that he'll quite happily try to follow this one even though it's going to be difficult for him.

The doctors were working overtime, there were a lot of people with severe dehydration on some days. The guys were working 8hours a day (normally they would work 12) in a desert with no shade and hitting 50C. (There were 2 doctors for about 200 people).
I think it's about devotion, showing you are devoted by fasting. It's not as bad as it seems as only healthy people are supposed to do it (young, old and infirm don't do it), and if they get life threateningly weak they are fine to get food and drink down them (the guys were fine with the doctors telling them to drink when they were told for example).
