ramdisks, why are we not seeing more of them?

oh and back to the ramdisk point,

just found some interesting figures posted up on the web

Ramdiscs Vs harddiscs

skip images

now.....even using 24 gig of ram on a rig to allow 8gig system and a 16gig ram drive thats an appealing thought. 16 gig drive with those kind of stats for say windows and your favourite game :)

Using system RAM would require a software based solution and, as I said, you'd have to "load" the Ram Disk from an SSD or HDD every time you started your PC before you can make use of it.

now now guys, no need to fall out :)

i'm only doing some musing here.

I like the idea of an SSD but i want something different and if possible faster, just sounding out various possibilities. :)

i'm not all there in the common sense dept. (i own an alfa, i feel the love for bulldozer and i'm seriously contemplating one over a 2500k setup. different is always good :)

not really an issue. my rig runs 24/7 i could use a ram drive for things like my games, certain apps etc (ie a non boot drive) and just regularly make a image of said drive or before any neccesary reboots)

ooooh a ramsan 300 for only £2700 :)

or a 64gig 400 for only 5k

thats what i want but only if they can knock out a version minus a zero on the prices.

thanks for the pointers stulid, always interesting to read up on these sorts of things.

might have to do some googling and see if i can find some comparisons on different options.

but if my numbers come up tonight :)

would be epic for playing fm2012 :)

All that for Football manager...

mainly not just for :)

i also play cities XL my 6970 overclocked copes fine.

i kid, i also indulge in some serious encoding and the occasional fps

Is it really worth it though?
8GB DDR3 is around £40?
64GB of DDR3 would cost £320 at that price!
So following that, 128GB would be £640!
You can get a 240GB RevoDrive3 X2 for £120 less than that!
Are you really gonna notice the speed increase in anything other than benchmarks?

no but when i slap my epeen on the table in discussions on access times and so forth it will be worth it :)

There is a product like the original Gigabyte I-Ram from Acard, which I believe took the concept and made it into a 5.25" bay with 6 or 8 slots of DDR2 RAM for up to 64Gb, plus it could use RAID0 and had a batter backup. I used a pair I-RAMs til one went south so dols them on the bay. I looked at the Acard product but it was expensive (around £200 + RAM) so opted for the SSD route instead (though I now run a RAMDisk direct from RAM).

My experience is limited to one game really, Arma2, which did benefit from having many of the game environment files in fast RAM instead of any disk, which reduced stuttering and freezing in the game.

Edit - apologies for bringing up an old thread, only just saw the last post date.

I would suggest a new product EMC just launched called project lightning, it ticks all the boxes and ships as standard with 384gb of ram

just a shame the cards are £30,000 :(

back in the real world I'd probably look at getting 32gb of system memory and dividing it up, I currently run BF3 on a ramdrive and it really does fly along and thats compared to raid 0'd SSD's that I use for my boot drive :)
