Rammstein

Which part is wrong - that Rammstein is fun or that Laibach were politically agitated nationalists?

Dude, you have to stop these oneliners. Post count is important, but this is taking it to extreme.

Laibach are the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst art collective.

Courtesy of wiki (because it explains it better than I can be bother to type ;)):

Laibach has frequently been accused of both far left and far right political stances due to their use of uniforms and totalitarian-style aesthetics and also due to the Wagnerian influence found in some of their music, notably the thunder in "Sympathy for the Devil (Time for a Change)" and releases such as Macbeth. Laibach always denied this strongly, pointing out that, as fascism needs a scapegoat, they had become their own scapegoat in the name of satire. Milan Fras, vocalist, is quoted as saying "We are fascists as much as Hitler was a painter" when confronted with such accusations. [1]

Laibach is notorious for rarely stepping out of character. Some releases feature artwork by the Communist artist John Heartfield, and Laibach concerts have sometimes aesthetically appeared as political rallies. When interviewed, they answer in wry manifestos, showing a paradoxical lust and condemnation for authority. [2]

Richard Wolfson wrote of the group:

Laibach's method is extremely simple, effective and horribly open to misinterpretation. First of all, they absorb the mannerisms of the enemy, adopting all the seductive trappings and symbols of state power, and then they exaggerate everything to the edge of parody... Next they turn their focus to highly charged issues — the West's fear of immigrants from Eastern Europe, the power games of the EU, the analogies between Western democracy and totalitarianism. [Wolfson, 2003]

Certainly far from a "self proclaimed neo-nazi band".

I've been listening to them since I got a crackly tape copy of Sympathy for the Devil when I was about ten...I've only ever known them as what they really are: a sardonic take on a far-right aesthetic carried out with a wry smile and two fingers up at everyone.

I can remember when Herzeleid came out Rammstein were accused of being Nazi's.
Singing in German obviously doesn't help.

At the age of fourteen I had half a dozen meatheads corner me for singing along to Du Hast when I saw them live.

Stereotypical thick Merkins.

"You one of them neo-nazis?!"

"**** off!"

"Are you?!"

"**** off!" *Dances away*

It's more that I was singing in German, had a skinhead and was wearing a khaki-coloured workshirt, I think :/

I looked like a Nazi for a lot of my teens... Basically, whenever I shaved my head. So I had long hair, mohawks, spiked hair, bunches, dreads...Everything else.

:/

(warning, photo of me when I was about 16...Looking like a white supremecist despite dating a Kenyan girl at the time.)

Since you like wiki so much:
"Since 1991, NSK claims to constitute a state, a claim similar to that of micronations. They issue passports; have presented shows of their work in the guise of an embassy or even as territory of their supposed state, maintain consulates in Florence, Italy and Umag, Croatia and have issued postage stamps."

Laibach always were self proclaimed neo nationalists. They always refused to be called fascists or subscribe to typical hitlerism agenda, but always admitted to represent utopian, political state. In utopian form the creators of NSK present the state as the ultimate totalitarism where members are denied their own freedom of choice in regard to religious persuasion and apolitical and aesthetic affiliation. Amen. Not exactly NSDAP but it's political (and art) movement towards nationalistic totalitarism never the less.

And it's all a wry joke :)

I'm not actually a big fan of wiki...It just serves a purpose when I can't be bothered to type and type and type and type and...

It's running a little bit too long for a joke, and it certainly didn't look like a joke when Yugoslavia was still up, they've done their share of stupid stuff outside their music, got themselves banned in few countries and if I recall correctly the first frontman even commited dramatic and theatrical suicide for some higher cause.

14.. du hast... mmm.. I thought you were older penski.

Rammstein Rule. Thats all there is to it hehe..

I listen to their albums all the time.. I only keep Rosenroot in the car tho.. some of the looks from the parents in a morning when I pull up at nursery are just magical..

Hmm. Do you own all of their albums?

Yes. Self-titled in demo, promo and release versions, all others as promos. I'm sure I've explained this before but here we go...

If so, explain how you came to that conclusion about SoaD?

SOAD song:

Intro
Loud bit
Quiet bit
Loud bit
Soaring bit
Loud bit
Quiet Bit
Loud bit
End.

Repeat twelve times, give it a title and sell it.

You've made me turn to my SoaD collection and going through some of the songs, i do disagree. Some follow the more 'normal' sound of quiet, dramatic loud bit, quiet and finish (Lonely Day) whereas others go against it entirely (Roulette for instance).

I once listened to SoaD in order of their albums all the way through and i do see how the band has evolved - changing their style slowly. And they remain one of my favourite bands. <3

Judging from your vast collection, you must be a fan?

Swaying back on topic to Rammstein, know of any more bands that sound like them, industrial i think is the correct term.
