Hi guys

wondered if anyone can help with my problem.

i have just installed the OC Asus rampage bundle with i7 920 and then loaded Win7.

When I shutdown, win7 closes and the screen goes black but all the fans are still spinning.

i have to turn the power off from the wall to stop them.

Any ideas??

Cheers

yes they all installed automatically apart from my ATI driver which i installed

They are and should, in theory, all be upto date and relevent.

However, i've had to roll back my lan driver and download and re-install by MB drivers to get my system stable (the odd thing being that Win 7 RC was fine).

The above contradicts an almost identical build that i built for a friend who has also just installed Win 7 and had zero problems using all the pre-intsalled drivers (odd I know).

Basically, it may be worth ruling a driver issue out by downloading and re-installing the manufactures drivers - mainly the chipset drivers.

Additional: was this a new build or a Win 7 install on a system that was working perfectly before?

A virus can sometimes cause this type of problem but as it's a new intsall it would seem very unlikely.

Did it have this problem straight after the fresh install or did it develop it?

If it did develop the problem, it may be worth running a virus checker and spyware apps just in case.

Additional: As it's a new install you could try re-installing again as there may have been a corruption during the install process.

It is overclocked, its the OverClockers rampage bundle from here that is clocked at 4ghz

When i do a fresh install of an OS i always return the system to stock. I then make sure everything is running smoothly before i introduce the clock again - just to eliminate the clock as a factor if things go t*ts up after the install.

This may not be your problem but as it’s a fresh install I would be tempted to re-install Win 7 again but this time with the system running at stock (reset the BIOS and load optimised defaults). If this does solve the problem – you can then reload the OcUK profile in the BIOS (check that one is saved first.).

cheers Plec

i tried that last night, Ive installed win7 3 times now..still same problem

Ouch!

So you've tried:

  • re-install at stock speeds
  • window updates
  • Manufacturer updates
  • ?

And prior to installing Win 7 it was working perfectly under Win XP?

It screams out as driver issue or OS/hardware conflict - yet you've tried uninstalling and reinstalling core drivers.

The only thing i would suggest is doing a comprehensive search via the web it may be a known problem - there may even be a post in the Win 7 RC thread (i'll do a quick search as i have 10 mins).

Additional: Have you tested to see if it will shut down in safe mode?

I did a general Google search - search link

There is quite a lot of info on this topic but most were driver related and trying to identify the driver.

Also, i noticed that some Asus boards running earlier BIOS are prone to this problem and a BIOS flash resolved the problem. Updating the BIOS is definetly worth a try but you would lose your OcUK profile so you would need to contact OcUK before you attempted this.

There are other posts regarding BIOS settings and device manager - but obviously you'll need to trial and error these yourself.

One noticible one regarding your MB was to take off all USB and PCI devices and then add them one by one after install - the problem for a couple was a front panel connector.

All a bit vague and daunting - but it would seem that there will, hopefully, be a simple solution to your annoying problem - when you identify it that is... ;)

Hopefully someone with a similar setup who has had the same problem will stumble across this thread and offer more contructive advice but fr now it's trial and error.

Good luck

EDIT: You may want to try a search in the Windows 7 forum (not an OcUk forum) i got a lot of hits there.

Good luck with it - these type of problems usually have an annoyingly simple solution but nearly always require an outrageous amount of time to identify with a new OSs/hardware.

Ok, thanks for all your help..

I unplugged everything except 1xhdd, dvd reader and even got a pci gpu to install this time and the problem is still here.

I'm not really sure what I can do next, any more ideas

Cheers

I'm reaching now but what keyboard and mouse do you have attached?

If they're modern and wireless have you tried the latest drivers?

Also do you have an old, simple wired keyboard and mouse you coud try?

Cheers plec, mouse and keyboard are just standard usb i think but will try and get hold of another set later.

One thing i did just test was shutting down from dos by holding down the power on the pc and its still the same. Screen goes black but fans and gpu still running.

So that means its not a win7 problem right?

Cheers again!

Sorry, I completely missed this.

Try running the same test from within the BIOS - if it wont shut down with the power button depressed for 4 seconds, then it would seem to be something else at fault.
