rampage formula issues

hi everyone.

I am having major issues at the moment and i am at my wits end. I come askign for your knowledgeable assistance to get my machine working finally.

basically i have a rampage formula and i cant get the thing to boot reliably. i bought the new board after mistakenly thinking my p5bwas dead when in fact it was the psu 12v rail which had died. because the board was still getting poweri assumed the psu was fine but when the rampage wouldnt start either i checked with a different psu and realised it was that.

anyway full specs are

d805 (yes i know its old but i am not changing until i get that 4.1ghz clock out of it)
rampage formula with 0410 bios
4gb dominator 8500+
7800GTX old but still works good
swiftech apogee
D5 pump
120.2 rad +res and other bits
Tagan psu
2 x 10k raptors
1 x 1tb spinpoint

so far i have the following

first attempt to boot it does nothing and the little post lcd says cpu init. after some fiddling with various parts i read that perhaps the previosu cmos settings were causing a problem so pressed the clear cmos button on the back.
it now boots up and aftervarious cpu fan arrors etc says press f1 for bios or f2 for load default settings and continue

i went into the bios the first few times and tried various settings as i had read that the ram may be trying to draw to many volts as the board only provides 1.8 and the dominator requires 2.1v so i tried that but i have never so far been able to get it to save settings and then post again. each time it will hang at various stages on the lcd post display.

the other option was to press f2 and load default values so a couple of times i tried that. i can in fact get through and load windows with no problem but i cannot restart the machine then. if i click shut down or restart then it shuts down and hangs when posting.

i have made a few assumptions given that i can get into windows sometimes that none of the components are bad and that it must be a problem with the settings on the board.

i could have course be totally wrong there but can you please help me as i just want to have a working pc again. currently stuck with my work laptopfor all internet activities :(
 
Firstly, are you running two or four memory sticks? If four then try it with just two sticks, and up the northbridge voltage by 0.1v. Then try again with four sticks.

If it's two sticks then try to set the tRFC to 54 with just one stick.
 
i have 2 sticks of 2gb

i just wanted to confirm what tRFC is. from the info i can find this is the REF cycle time. on reading the manual i see the following optionsfor the ref time

20 DRAM clocks
25 DRAM clocks
30 DRAM clocks
35 DRAM clocks
42 DRAM clocks

can you please confirm if i am looking at the correct thing here and if not pleasecorrect me.

also you mentioned setting it to 54. is there a multiplier i should be using also?
 
Yip you're looking at the right thing. I'd forgotten that ASUS gave stupid options for tRFC. A lot of OCZ memory also have issues because they can need tRFC set to 54 too (that's an issue I sufferered from when I had my Maximus Formula).

Does the BIOS still freeze with just one stick of memory placed in the far left slot?

It's something that a BIOS upgrade may sort, but that's not something you want to do if the board is freezing.
 
i tried with a ref of 55 which was the closest i could find and itstarted to post with some artifactson the screen etc and then stuck while checking ram

i updated to the latest bios already 0410 yesterday

as before i can boot if i push the clr cmos button down first but i cannot then change any settings and get it to boot.

the only way i can boot at all is to press f2 which loadsthe setup defaults automatically after a clr cmos but then i can only boot once

after that first boot it will not restart cold or warm without clr cmos
 
ok will check that out. is there any possibility that this is just down to an issue with the mobo and not a ram related issue?

could there be another setting i am missing or something like that?
