randal's Linux gaming adventure.

I know it's a ballsy move given AMD's current stance, but I have faith in their marketing. :D

What AMD card were you running before the switch?

Moved over to Crossfired 7970s now... :o

Will hopefully get a chance over the festive period to get them properly set up under Xubuntu and SteamOS and then post up some benchies. :)

Don't do it dude! AMD don't seem to give a hoot about its Linux drivers. I had nothing but hangs and crashes using AMD - switched to a nVidia 680GTX and fixed all the bugs
I agree with this a little

I have a AMD card, have never had any crashes but the performance seems really poor :( even with the catalyst beta drivers (can't really run DOTA2 on linux without framerate dropping below 60fps, am running at 120fps cap in windows without fps drops on higher settings)

I'm hopefully going to go back to nvidia after christmas :D

As mentioned before, it's an interesting time for all GPU owners looking to take the Linux jump. SteamOS will invariably drive improvements across both sides on the driver front, and even kernel updates are starting to bring regular hikes in features and performance too.

Just a case of patience I think, this time next year we'll be in a very different place I feel.

So, a year on, how are things with SteamOS Randal?

Alas the birth of our child put an end to things like SteamOS tinkering!

Closest I get to it now is Steam running on the Ubuntu install on the Microserver downstairs on media duties, which is used solely for streaming and purchases.

Once I get the X99 build finalised I might stick another drive in and have a tinker again, from what I've been reading it's come along nicely. I'm back on the green team with a 780Ti so graphics stuff should be much simplified too.

Keep getting really tempted to exactly the same as you Randal. Unfortunately there are literally one or two games that point blank refuse to run on Linux, one of which the other half dearly loves (Sims 4). Really can't wait until the day comes that I can be rid of Windows.

Playing about with Ubuntu 14.04 running on the following:

CPU : i3 4150
Motherboard : Gigabyte H97N mITX
GPU : GTX 780
RAM : Avexir Blitz 1.1 Original 8GB (2x4GB) @ 1600
SSD : MX100 512gb
HDD : 2TB WD.
PSU : Seasonic M12II EVO Edition 750W
CASE : Fractal Core 1000

Looking to swap the GTX 780 for a GTX 750Ti, and also swap out the Seasonic for a Silverstone SST-ST65F-G due to its smaller footprint and running the GTX 750 Ti will make the case a little tidier :)

Originally had a 120gb Kingston, however like most of the kit in this rig (RAM/GPU/SSD) it has all been second hand via the MM.

Runs War thunder via steam fluently, no difference from running it on my windows box. And as you guys know, makes for a great media consumption option.

Looking forward to what else you try randal.

I did a fresh install in the new year with Fedora and so far haven't been able to play several source games, because for whatever reason they don't like XFS. This problem has existed in one incarnation or another since 2013 despite Valve pushing steam client updates since then with alleged fixes for the issue. Also possible that it simply doesn't like large partitions as others report it does or does not work depending on partition size. And my /home is a 20TB XFS partition, so there's that :o
