Random Beeping and sound problems

Every now and again my PC speaker beeps. It does it normally on startup and everything is fine but while I am using windows It will just give a beep at a random time. This has been happening for about a month now and although it's not annoying or anything I am slightly worried that it is a sign of a problem to come. It never used to do it. Any ideas?

I ahve also been having problems with the inbuilt sound but this appears to be a software problem rather than hardware. It will also randomly stop working after a while but as soon as I log out It works again (even plays the little jingle as I log out)

My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 1.7Ghz Processor
FIC K7M-400 Motherboard
608MB DDR RAM (512MB Slot 0, 128MB Slot 1)
VIA/SG3 Unichrome
VIA AC'97 Audio Controller

try updating your sound drivers..

as far as the beep is concerned does it occur whilst you are doing something specific? did the problem just occur randomly or has it been there since day 1?

I would remove all sound drivers and then try installing the latest ones...

I'm not doing anything specific when it happens although it could possibly be something running in the background (maybe my antivirus or a service) although it seems completely random

also, just downloaded new sound drivers and installing them.
