Hi guys

I have a strange problem, I have one of these:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/koli...c-3.1-external-enclosure-black-hd-003-kk.html

I have loaded it up with a WD Blue M.2 drive. My video camera (BMPCC4K) can use external USB drives to write on which is cheaper then the CFast cards and much faster than SD cards which the camera otherwise takes. Its also much easier to transfer the file to PC since the drive can just be plugged in and copying is quick from the SSD or I can work directly of the drive if I need to.

This is fine except that the camera will only work properly with the cable supplied with the Kolink enclosure, it works flawlessly with this cable. Also, when plugged into the PC the enclosure works with any USB C cable I have tried. If I use any cable other than the supplied Kolink one with the camera, the light on the enclosure comes on for a moment then goes off and the camera can't see the drive. If I use windows to format the drive the camera will detect the drive once, but then won't when replugged in.

As far as I can tell the cables are all fine, one is Apple so I thought it could have some weird protocol or be power only, another cable came with one of those USB2 devices with a USBC connector so I thought maybe its not up to spec. The third cable though is decent quality one (though a few years old).

I understand the USBC spec is all over the place so I figure maybe I should buy the highest spec one I can but I don't know it will fix the problem. The only other notable difference in cables is that its Kolink one is really short.

The obvious solution is to only use this cable but if I lose it, it gets broken or I want a longer cable then I could do with knowing what I need to buy.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the issue here?

The camera seems to be USB-C 3.1 Gen 1.

You think if I get one these USB 4 40Gbps cables, there's a good chance it should be way over speced and should just work?

I have bought an Anker 515 USB4. It seems to work fine, so I guess it was down to cable specs then. Must be on the camera end though since the old cables work fine with the PC directly connected to the caddy.

Kind of want to bin all my old cables and just buy a bunch of these so I know which ever cable I pick up will be up to spec (I did this with my cat5) but at £24 each for a USB4 cable that would add up quickly.
