Random drug testing.

With these jobs that are tested because of safety, do they check whether you got enough sleep the night before and that you had something to eat before working?

I can't speak for others but in our line of work (ATC), each individual is responsible for ensuring their fitness for duty. If there is any doubt about their ability to operate safely, all they have to do is mention it to a supervisor and they'll either get to go home to recover or they can do other tasks which are not safety critical. This includes fatigue.

Plenty of times after sleepless nights with a new baby, I would go to work and do some admin instead of controlling because I was too tired and fatigued to control but I also wasn't sick enough to take a day off.

Threepwood. Interesting name.

I am serious. Are the checks to do with covering their company bottoms legally, or do they genuinely consider other things that will affect how one performs in their job. Like did they get enough sleep and did they eat today.

Edit: Tho' I guess some jobs, one of the marks of how awesome you are at it depends on how you deal with things under certain pressures too.

Got a pre-employment one next week. Quit smoking the green about 2 months ago to get it out of my system completely. There are many ways round it, substitution, dilution, but I wanted my first one to be done properly.

Why don't politicians adhere to practices they push down the net?

Rob Ford is a perfect example of why this should be mandatory for them.

Yep, in the transport industry working for First Bus. Our alcohol limit is less than half the legal limit and oral swabs taken for drug testing.

They say it's random but I've never been randomly selected in the 7 years I've been working there. Automatic testing if you have an accident.

Aye we have it at our place(s). Although it's not so random as pretty much anyone who goes on either a stag weekend or to Amsterdam gets tested the following Monday.
Also our operations director is a known alky and yet he never gets tested...

When i had to have a medical for a new job that included unspecified urine and blood tests (and it's not like you can ask what they test for without looking suspicious) i got some urine testing kits.

After 30 days off i was still showing positive (previously i was smoking every day), after 31 and the morning of my medical i got an all clear.

It turns out that the test wasn't even for drugs but as part of the BUPA type benefit that was part of my package.

But i read that dilution won't necessarily work, they'll just flag you as suspicious if you have extremely watery pee!

im all for it.

As soon as the banks start to introduce it it will do some real damage to the cocaine trade in Lndon .

The banks are some of the biggest players in the drug trade, so they're hardly likely to want to seriously reduce it.

I'm not in tinfoil hat territory here - it's been proven six ways from Sunday but nothing happens because the big banks are more powerful than any government. One was fined last year because they were money laundering on an epic scale, but the fine was minor compared to their profits.

I wouldn't mind random testing that was relevant to safety and performance on the job, but that's not what random drug testing is.

Yea I bought some home testing kits, £1 a piece from eBay and tested myself every few days...took 3 weeks for my first negative. I was also smoking more or less every day (although small amounts). Annoying thing is the 'negative' line seems to always be so faint compared to the 'control' line it always gives me a slight worry :p but another month has passed since then so I have no doubt I should be fine next week for the actual test.

Yep will also have to do a blood test, I got an information sheet and it basically told me exactly what they are gonna be testing for

Yea I did a lot of research and dilution is indeed not the best idea, substitution is the way to go if you really have to but it was about time I quit anyway so im doing it all legit :D

Anyone think that those on benefits (those that aren't working) should be subjected to random screenings as part of their claim conditions?

Personally I do. Positive result = no benefits.

Does anyone here have the above as a company policy ?

I went in to work at 7am on Friday and had to report straight to it. Pee in a bottle and alcohol breath test. First time I've had to do it.

Yup. Had to do it at the start of employment, and last week got pulled in for a random one.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, and it's only fair that the guys in the office do it as well as the guys out in the field. It saves lives, prevents mistakes and less likely to put people in danger through being in an unfit state to work.

I'm all in favour of it for my industry.

Apart from the last 4 nights I seldom drink anyway, and drugs, well, meh to those.

I think i remember reading something in the news a while back about an alcohol test being achieved by some sort of fingerprint scanning machine. And that this would eventually become common practice for all employees in a workplace.

Extremely unlikely to ever happen, many industries use alcohol hand wash as standard. So i don't see how such a device would work. Surely such a device relies on alcohol in sweat and thus you would get false positives.

Yeah, a computer spits out a name and you get tested...no peeing though..its a breath test and a swab from the inside of your cheek. I'm not sure why we do it given my job,but I expect there must be some reason or critical position where its necessary.
