random instant power off problem

I have been working on a pc recently, installing an SSD. The system was very solid before with no crashing or other problems.

Initally all seemed well until the PC decided to do a hard power off, with no obvious reason why. (it did not shut down, the power was instantly off) the system then rebooted normally for a couple of minutes then would do another hard power off then reboot.

There are no windows error messages other than it saying the system experienced and unexpected power off without shutting down properly.

after that the PC would then work fine for 24 - 48 hours without this fault accouring again.

I was re installing windows on the new drive and it powered off near the end of the install, and then again in the BIOS after 1 successful reboot.

the system spec is
Asus P6X58D-E
i7 960
12GB Coarsair XMS3 ram
AMD 5850 gfx
250gb samsung evo ssd
1tb hdd (tho not connected during install)
(completely stock with no tweaking or overclocking)

the system seemed to run without problem with the ssd connected to the intel ich10r sata ports but has begun crashing/resetting/tripping out on the marvel 9128 onboard 6G sata ports

My first test will be to switch the ssd back to the ich10r ports and see what happens there. if that makes no difference then the psu would be my next item to swap

Any ideas and comments? I have rarely experienced these sort of hard power off problems unless i have been overclocking or running an underpowered psu.. but this has been running fine for 3 years, i cant see an ssd tipping it over the edge! ha

cheers!
Andrew.

sorry for the delayed reply..

its only done it once since posting this, so hopefully its going to be ok, i re checked all the cables and connections and nothing seemed to be loose

the PSU is a Coolermaster GX650 so should have no problems with the load

the only thing that i changed was enabling the marvel sata chipset which did improve the speed of the ssd a fair bit so it would be a shame if there is a fault there
