Random Japan Trip Notes

It was this time last year I started thinking of going to Japan.

In the end I opted for 4 weeks traveling around Thailand, Laos and Cambodia in Dec 2015 - Jan 2016.

However I am starting to think again what am I going to do for a holiday.

Japan is on the agenda. This year I think I will only have two weeks to play with as I have moved jobs and due to my start date only have 13 days holiday this year. :o

The park doesn't have a huge amount in it, four big coasters and some small rides. The day we went they closed one of the coasters for maintenance but didn't announce it in advance.

The park was empty, if you had put that number of people in Thorpe Park you could have walked on to any ride in less than five minutes. No ride queue we joined took less than an hour, most were 90 minutes.

The coasters only seemed to run one train and loading was extremely inefficient. The train comes into the station and you are allowed into the loading area. You must put all your belongings (including glasses) into a locker whilst fighting those getting off the train for space.

The ride attendant then checks everyone's pockets before they are allowed on. Then when you get on there is the usual double checking of restraints etc. Since the cars don't hold many people this makes everything slow.

Apparently this is how things are done at Japanese theme parks so expect this everywhere. I have been told that it isn't as bad at Nagashima spa land so I'm trying there this year.

I just got back from Kawaguchiko, very nice and excellent view :)

I can highly recommend accommodation if you're interested also.

Sounds awful, and not worth the trip. Tbh I mostly wanted to go for the haunted house and maze there.

Currently on a bullet train to hiroshima. Tokyo tomorrow :)

I've been to both Universal and Nagashima this week so some thoughts below.

Universal

The park opened at 9.30 and we arrived at 8.30 and the queue to enter the park was already massive. By the time the gates opened it was insane. We had a pass called 'universal cool japan' which provided timed access to some of the popular attractions as well as entry to the Biohazard escape room.

Our first attraction was the escape room and the entry was timed for 9.30-9.45 so we went straight there and queued up. When in the first room we were assembled into groups of 4 made up of people who could speak the same language. The actual event didn't start until 10.15 but when it did it was fantastic. The placed was filled with actors playing the part of zombies, umbrella corp staff and soldiers.

The basic premise was some terrorists (I think) broke into umbrella Corp and stole and released a virus which turned people into zombies. The players are all infected and have to find the three pieces of information to assemble the vaccine and escape. All the puzzles are answered on an ipad in multiple languages, some were quite easy but there were a couple of really tricky ones. The event takes place on 4 floors so the space is quite large. The whole thing was really well themed and actors playing zombies were everywhere and would jump out at the players randomly, there were a lot of screaming girls. One of the guys on our team was convinced that the first zombie we saw was a model and went right up to it, it then jumped off the floor screaming. I've never seen anyone run that fast in my life.

You have about 45 minutes to solve the puzzles and escape, my team got to the last puzzle but couldn't get out the final door because we ran out of time. Of the 80 or so people in the event only 8 escaped (2 teams). They then assembled everyone in a final room before the last battle was played out (with explosions) before we saw a screen saying 'you are dead'. All in all this is probably the best thing I have done at any theme park.

The ticket also entitled us to two 4d shows (attack on titan and evangelion). These took place in the same theatre and both did the usual blowing air and spraying water. They were both OK but since this was completely in Japanese you'd be lost if you didn't understand the language or hadn't seen the shows.

Between 2 of the timed events we managed to sneak a ride on the Hollywood Dream coaster. The main queue was 120mins long but the single rider queue was 30. This is the trick to doing anything at the park although how quickly the single rider queue moves seems to depend a lot on the attendant at the top, it appeared to me as though they tried to slow it down a bit. This coaster allows you to select from one of five songs to listen to whilst on the ride. Most of the people I could see selected One Direction (described as modern rock???). This was quite fun as you had people clapping and singing all the way round the track.

We had timed entry to an XR ride based on Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (jpop singer). This had a huge queue so I was glad to be able to skip the line here. It's a roller coaster which you ride whilst wearing a Samsung gear vr which puts you in a cartoonish world which is timed to the coaster. I quite enjoyed the ride but found the headgear heavy and it put a strain on my neck whilst going over the bumps and drops. I also found the resolution of the display to be a little low for me. My girlfriend enjoyed the ride but got motion sickness afterwards.

The final timed entries were to the Harry Potter world and the 4d fantastic journey ride. The Harry Potter world is a themed area of the park that gets so popular that they have had to put a queue line to get in (60 minutes on some days). The level of detail here is really high and the whole area looks fantastic. There are shops that you would recognise from the film and books although we didn't go in because they had 20 minute queues.

The Harry Potter ride was probably one of the highest quality ride themings I have seen. You sit in a car which is on an articulated arm which runs on a track. You get moved through different scenes from the films which are in 4k and 3d (using glasses) as well as recreations of the castle and forests. This made both my girlfriend and myself (as well as about half the people coming off the ride) motion sick.

The final ride of the day was the flying dinosaur, a flying type ride with a huge queue (single rider to the rescue). My girlfriend loved this but I'm not a fan of coasters where they move you into a flying position, they tend to hurt my neck.

This was a pretty expensive park to visit, entry was about £45pp and the special passes probably another £30pp. The food and drink was expensive and there was a boat load of cool stuff to buy in the shops (again very expensive for what it was).

Nagashima Spa Land

We arrived at the park at around 8.50 and were the first people there, even at 9.30 when the park opened there could only have been about 50 people outside. This looked to be the perfect opportunity to ride the Steel Dragon 2000.

Ever since this coaster opened in 2000 I wanted to ride it and although it's 16 years later it is still the longest coaster in the world (4 minutes and over 2000m).

We raced over to the entry to the coaster, which had a small queue. From the station you can't really see the big (90m) lift and having raced through the park I hadn't really taken it in. Once you come out of the station it's height really takes you back. I'm sure over half the ride is spent on that lift, which gives plenty of time for the other passengers to start getting scared.

The drop is fantastic and the ride felt quite smooth, the best bit wasn't the big drop it was the repeated small hills on the return which gave you air in your seat (provided you hadn't done the seat belt and lap restraint up too much).

There are 2 other big rides at the park, the acrobat which is essentially the same ride as universals flying dinosaur, and white cyclone which is a huge wooden coaster. I rode both and wasnt the biggest fan of either, the acrobat for the same reason as the flying dinosaur and the wooden coaster was just too bone shaking for me.

There are a number of other small coasters in the park which, because the park was so empty, you could just walk straight on to. At one point I rode one of the coasters entirely by myself.

Because it was an off day quite a few of the shops and restaurants weren't open which made the choice of food a bit limited. I ended up eating a bizarre pasta dish.

Because of the lack of queues I was able to ride the steel dragon as much as I wanted, it's probably the best coaster I've been on (although my big coaster experience is limited to fuji q, six flags new England and Bush gardens).

Because summer doesn't officially start until 1st July we couldn't use the water park (about half the site) which looked to have some good slides.

This was a great park for thrill rides plus it was only £29 per person for entry and unlimited rides (alternatively you could pay £10 to get in plus a per ride fee - £7 is for the big rides).

Damn I wish I'd noticed this thread before. I'm flying back from Japan right now! Only another 10 hours to go...

Thanks for the above, we've both done universal before so we decided just to leave the parks.

Leave tomorrow. Such an exciting place to visit.

I'm home now too. It seems weird walking down the street and not being able to get a drink from a vending machine, oh well there's always next year.

LOL, can you imagine what would happen if we had them? Vandalised within minutes. One thing I love about Japan, (nearly) everyone behaves so well.

Plus everything would be £2 and out of stock.

The first time I came back from Japan my sister was paying for the parking at Heathrow and I spotted a coke machine. Whilst it was expensive (£1.50 for water £2 for coke) I was really thirsty and had a longish drive home.

I popped my money in and the machine swallowed it, welcome home.

Yeah but I don't miss the hard choice of which celebrity coffee to get :p
