I have Windows 7 Home premium and a MS Comfort Curve 2000 Keyboard, when I get to the log in screen the password box fills with characters as if someone is sitting in the keyboard, does the same when I log into my Dad's account that doesn't require a password and as soon as you open any window that has text input you get 'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm' etc.

It seems to be totally random but can often be triggered just by switching accounts, so I could be using the computer for an hour and then switch accounts and it would happen! I've tried different drivers, BIOS, USB ports and it still persists. The only way to stop it is to pull out the keyboard and plug it in again.

Also I seem to have a problem where the mouse powers on but Windows does not accept any input from it - this is far less frequent however.

Full spec:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
CPU: Intel Core i5 - 2500
MB: H67MA-USB3-B3 (BIOS version F4 10/27/2011)
System HDD: Crucial M4-CT128M4SSD2

Any suggestions would be appreciated, the only thing I can think of is to bin my current keyboard and mouse but I've never had any problems in the past using them with Win7.

my misses has this keyboard on her win7 rig

i would try a different keyboard first to be sure it is or isn't the keyboard itself...

if the problem keeps on going with a different keyboard then i would uninstall your usb ports and reinstall them

I don't know about the 'mmmmmmmmmmm' thing, but my PC was having a couple of issues including the mouse not working upon startup from time to time (Same as you described it).
After something else occurred, I ended up taking out the CMOS battery and replacing it after a few minutes.

Voila, problems solved. Can't guarantee anything, but you never know...
