random loss of internet

Before you do all that, does it say media disconnected when you select DHCP assigned? What do you get when you do assign via DHCP?

The other thing I noticed is that the ip address is set quite high, I know in most routers, you assign a pool of ip addresses and this static one might be outside this range.

What happens if you boot into safe more with networking? Can you get on the internet then?

tolien: it could be yeah, although not sure why it would die over night like that.

It is very possible. My onboard VIA network device died the night after I first turned on my PC. It still shows up as working perfectly in Windows, but it won't respond to a wire being inserted (no light activity or OS response). Luckily, the board has a second ethernet port, so I'm now using that.

I would suggest a cheap PCI card.

BTW: Maybe try wiring directly into another PC via crossover cable?

mejinks - dhcp assigned being static ip? not sure i understand what you mean. i checked the ip pool and it's inside that. i'll try booting into safe in a sec.

tim - hmmm, that's slightly worrying. however...

just put in an old network card i found kicking around and guess what? it doesn't work when i use that either. another new development is that i can now ping the router (either using the network card or either of the 2 ports on the mobo).

suggests that it might not be the mobo (fingers crossed)?

That sounds promising mate. Are you running Vista by any chance? Although on second thoughts, if it doesn't work on Linux it's not going to be OS related. Well granted the successful ping wasn't a fluke, I'd say you can be pretty certain the problem does not lie with either the hardware or software on your system.

Routers do funny things sometimes. Try resetting yours to the factory defaults. And if there's an option, backup your current config first so you can restore it if the reset doesn't work.

No, sorry. DHCP is when you let the router give you an ip address. Actually come to think about it, I noticed you have a netgear router. We had no end of odd problems when we used one at home. Wiping the config and reinputting it solved the problem every time, its just we had to do it every other month.
