I seem to remember that I saw something on the news saying that if your stopped by the police they have to fill in a card or document which they give you with the reason they stopped you, is this right ?
The reason I'm asking is because one of my relatives has been stopped in her car and they asked loads of silly questions about where she lived, where she is going, who she is going to see, their address etc. But, they didnt give her a reason for why they stopped her.

your right, they are supposed to give you a document about why they stopped you, i heard it on the radio all last week, this know your rights thing

No, thats if they stop and search you.

The op is refering to a traffic stop. In this situation they should advise the driver of the vehicle as to why they have been pulled over, but need make no official written record of the stop unless they are taking it further, eg making an arrest, searching the car and whatever else.

you say weird questions, What sort of questions did they ask?

thing is, you ask for said document then as if by magic something happens to your car that equals a fine and some points.

Last time I got stopped (ring of steel) I got one of these

Copper looked me up and down and ask me "how would you describe your build" its a question on the form, "fat" says I and he writes it down :D

Nope, White tubby middle aged woman driving a polo. They also asked for her home and mobile phone numbers. She was driving on the main A23 through croydon airport at the time and it was midday by all accounts. She now tells me they said they will phone her within 5-7 days

Sounds like a chat up!

If you are stopped and searhed or stopped and asked to account for your being in a ceratin place at a certain time whilst on the street, then you must be told certain things AND be given a record of the stop and search/account.

If you are stopped whilst driving a car there is no obligation for you to be given a reason for the stop, nor are you entitled to a record of it.

It happened to me once before too, I just thought it was because I was driving along at a strange hour so I just went along with it. Maybe they get bored ?!!?

edit: I was joking BTW :p I'm sure they've got loads more to worry about
