ok, crossfireX capable of running 4 ati cards, at 8/8/8/8.

I know currently graphics don't even come close to touching the headroom of the x16 pathways, (which makes pci-e 2.0 kinda useless) but i'm still entrigued by this.

Anyone here have any idea on the two following things, (they relate... kinda... i should probably post the second half in a different forum)

1: When crossfireX will use the 16/16/16/16

2: When the new AMD processor socket is due. We all know by the fact that nothing new is coming right now, that AM2 is coming near the end of its reign with the release of the Phenom. So the next new socket size cant be far off right?

(if your wondering why i say they relate, i have a hunch that the x16/16/16/16 will be released on the boards with the new socket type)
 
So its fairly safe to say that CrossfireX is aimed squarely at dual 3870X2 owners only then... or maybe some tri-crossfire, although the only 3 slot pcie boards ive seen have been nVidia chipsets...

I'm not sure how well Tri xfire works

but if you look at benches of 2 dual cards im pretty certain its a tiny boost over having 2 cards which imo is a big waste of money.

For the price of whats almost effectively 4 seperate cards its disgusting the performance you get. Maybe they should just bring out a GPU that will last 2x as long as other high end cards, people wouldnt even need SLI or xfire then. Plus it would stop all the moaning about games such as crysis :]
 
well i think that (kinda) affectively answered my question on the graphics side of things. I never really thought that quad would be needed anyway, tbh the only real improvement is that there's more headroom. But since the headroom on SLi / Crossfire still isn't being used completely it is a bit of a waste.

It always annoys me that they bring out all this new stuff when its not needed. Yes i know that its good money for them, but i'd rather see them work for a long while, and wait for a need for the new hardware, and THEN release something which is an insane improvement.

The high end cards, most games don't scratch the potential and yet they're bringing out even more powerful cards.

I would say its the same for processors, but some high end processors are still reaching their limits. It just seems like graphics cards are leaping and bounding ahead of the rest of the systems nowadays. Who needs quad sli, when the processors and RAM aren' at a high enough speed to use them propperly.
