Random Question - Visibility

What factors determine how good the visibility is?

I was hoping toget some decent photos of a landscape near me the other day but the visibility was very poor. I understand for us in England that a Northerly wind brings far better visibility than a Southerly, but what other factors are there?

particles in the air. be it fog, pollution etc.

Other weather apart from wind direction. Like temperature, cloud cover.

Time of day might affect it (height of sun). Height of person?

I'm totally guessing here btw, but I'm sure there's a suggestion which might be useful haha.
