Hey all,

new to these boards, and I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to overclocking and doing anything to a computer that involves taking it apart.

I recently bought an Ultima OC HD 4870 X2 comp deal with intel core quad 2.4 and Qx 6950 3.00 duel core DDr2....xp home edition..and it has, er..2.75 GB of ram. (I don't know what else is relevant to my problem.)

It was fine for a month or so, but recently it has began just shutting down suddenly when I try to play any games. Usually after about an hour or so.

I opened the main unit up and used some compressed air to clean the dust off the fans as best I could (i did some searches online for tips) but this didn't seem to help. I made sure the room wasn't too hot and I even downloaded a program to monitor the temp of theb comp...it never seems to go over 40c...which from what I can gather is ok, and I checked this when it was running a game at full specs.

I'm at a loss. I updated the graphics drivers recently too. I've tried a few different games and it's the same with all of them.

I wonder if it could be a power issue as I had it plugged into a 4 point adapter along with the large monitor and a few other things...I'm going to test it being plugged straight into the wall....no idea if that helps as it has an internal power source and I just use a kettle lead.

Can anyone help me out here?

Difficult to diagnose but it does sound like an overheating issue....

Problem is that it could be any number of items overheating.

Download everest and have it monitor all your temps... That will give a fair idea of how the system as a whole is doing.

I downloaded a temp monitoring program and ran it whilst I fired up a game, and the temps didn't flutuate all that much, nothing went over 40c, which I gather to be totally acceptable....of course I've no idea if they jumped up just before shutdown because the computer just blanks down, no chance to check anything.

can someone have a look at the package deal I bought from overclockers and tell me if the power supply, which is a corsair tx 650w nexct gen is good enough for it, cause I've read that can shut the computer down too.and I'm almost certain it's not the temp of the comp.

i've been having a pretty similar problem for a while now, crashing/restarting when trying to game. i had a pretty cheap power supply and upgraded it to a corsair TX650W and still have the problem.so i don't think you're have a power problem there.

I would go with the overheating problem or dodgy graphics drivers...although could be almost anything?
Does it just shut down when gaming?
Does it behave as normal when just running the base op system?
Does it shut down when running heavy apps?

Check the error logs and see what they say. If not, check the temp's yourself - temperature monitoring software wont monitor northbridge, southbridge or RAM temperatures which can get very warm without proper ventilation.
