random smiley question

A couple of my friends on msn have little smiley/emoticon pics in front of their names. Why is it that sometimes when i sign on (and they are usually showing as offline) the pics show as code (such as (@)) and sometimes i see the proper pic of a bird etc?

not important really, just bugging me a little.
