Random system shutdowns

Hi

I recently bought a few bits and bobs and built my new rig -

CPU - Core i7 920 D0
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
RAM - OCZ Obsidian 3 x 2Gb
GPU - Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 5870
Cooler - CoolIT Domino
PSU - Akasa Powermax 850W
Case - Cosmos S with two additional 120mm case fans

I followed this guide and started to mildly overclock my CPU up to 3Ghz.

Ran the prime95 torture test for an hour successfully.

Now my system seems to intermittently shut down without warning - just like somebody pulled the power cable out. At one point I couldn't even power on - leds were lit up on the mobo and power button but touching the power button did nothing, and pressing the power button on the mobo itself did nothing either. I disconnected the mains and removed the CMOS battery, after that the system powered up, with everything at stock settings.

It still randomly shuts down. It just shut down while I was typing this post for the first time, so I'm now using my trusty Inspiron 1525 running Linux!

I'm thinking either a bad PSU or bad RAM, I've heard bad things about the OCZ Obsidian, but I don't think bad RAM would cause the symptoms I'm experiencing - probably I'd get BSOD? So before I RMA my PSU, does anybody have any thoughts? If it was a bad PSU, how would removing the CMOS battery help it to power up?

Maybe a bad bios? I had a similar problem with a bios I had loaded once - other than that it could be a lot of diff things lol, there is a lot smarter ppl on here than me though haha, just thought id try and help :(

Just tried to power up again - when I put the power lead into the back of the PSU, it seemed like the system was going to power on without me touching the power button, then it shut down again.

After a couple of presses of the power button it powered on briefly, then off briefly, then on again.

I got a message about the BIOS not being found, and that the backup BIOS was being loaded. Started Windows ok after that, which lasted about 3 minutes before suddenly cutting the power again. Now it seems to be switching off and on again. Each time it goes off it seems like it tries to come on again but doesn't get very far.

I am totally not cool with this wierdness happening on my expensive new rig. I already got smacked in the head by the g/f when she saw the mountain of boxes arrive and I took over the front room. I then got punched when she saw the size of the Cosmos S!

Update - tried starting windows, but power suddenly shut off again. I just left it and then it powered on again by itself!

Updated BIOS, will post results tomorrow

haha ye, I have a cosmos s myself- check the power switch on the motherboard too - make sure its pushed on proper, but to tell u the truth mine when I first got it was very sensitive the button that is.

Hope you get it sorted, you might be right about the dodgey CPU, have u got a spare one to check? from an older pc maybe idk trial and error really although if its a brand new rig you shouldnt have to do all this in all truth.

Problem solved - it was the power button on my Cosmos S. It's one of those fancy touch buttons and it seems to be faulty.

As soon as I disconnected it from the mobo all was fine... less than a week old so will return to OCuk for replacement.
