*rant*how to cripple a computer?

Run SETI in the background or something in low priority. Maybe that will occupy a 'bit' of CPU time for you to at least show them how slow the rig is.

I do a lot of photo editing on my rig and it's painfully slow. I've asked for it's ram to be upped from 128mb to 512mb but am still awaiting for that to happen. I've even considered bringing my XPS lappy into work but given the type of work I do (military stuffs) I can't see our IS dept letting me do that.

128mb your joking right? looks like you're worse than me then!

whinge at your Manager.

If they don't get you a machine that is more suited to the task, then you're in the wrong company tbh.

Let someone else use the hamster wheel, and get yourself looking for a better company.

If there is a business case for you having a faster workstation you should be going through your boss and he will go to his boss and so on up the chain until there is someone authorised to get you that PC ordered.

Can you put a figure on your lost productivity? Have you demonstrated this to your boss? Is your boss happy with your performance?

If your boss doesn't care you'll just have to wait till IT get round to you :/

my boss is on my side but won't speak out against the it director. ill just have to hang on and pull out what little hsir I have left!
I should have said something at interview time because I saw the state of a few of the computers and should have said something but I was to busy being impressed with the flash New office, they must have spent the it budhet on the floor to ceiling windows..

spit some water into that back of the PSU Fan :p

Or act like this guy and you might get a new one but I think you would get the sack :D

work as slow as your computer allows, if it's really that slow, they'll upgrade it for you.

My computer's a pain in the ass, but it's just fast enough to do my job so I have to put up with it! ;/

I have exactly the same problem at school. The main computer room has durons with 192mb of ram and take a minute to compile "hello world", I hope the technicians are fired as they must be putting the I.T. budget in their own bank accounts.

Yeah I think you should do what someone else here said: Rant to your boss, showing him how slow it is. If nothing happens then you're at the wrong company.
Of course then you'd have the hassle of finding another job.... so maybe it would be better to just stick something between the CPU fan and wait for it to burn. Mind you, my old Dell has a 3Ghz P4 with no fan and that's still working 5 years later  Only one case fan as well (outflow).

Killing the CPU fan won't work on the P4. The P4 will simply throttle and eventually shut down if it gets too hot.

The best way to get them to upgrade is to tell them what's it in for them. Show and explain to them how you'll be a much more productive member of the team with a computer that can do the job faster, so you're not waiting around for things to render etc. :)
