Rant - "Search the Forums"...

almost as annoying as when you're the first post after the OP, and then 5 people pop their heads in to mention you've made a mistake, yet offer no help to the OP.

grr.

I agree 100 percent. Some people seem to have a real attitude problem about others posting in threads that aren't on the front page or two, in fact I've even seen people getting told off for 'dragging up old threads' or even more ridiculously for 'bumping' a thread they haven't yet posted in!

It's hardly suprising there are so many reposts when people using the search function or simply browsing older threads get treated in such a fashion.

Personally I'd like to see some kind of userstats showing stuff like:

Number of threads started
Number of replies
Number of threads posted in

in addition to the post count for each user. Some people start a lot of threads and have maybe something like an 10:1 posts:starts ratio, whereas others tend to just comment on things they see and have maybe 100:1 or even higher. Then you've got the people who post a throwaway comment or two in every thread, compared to others who comment in only a few threads, but maybe make half a dozen replies or more in the threads they do get involved in.

As you quoted my post about the thread being old and gay, if you look outside the box it was a perfectly good, valid two sentanced freestyle.

It might help if the search function wasn't awful. Half the time I've ever searched for something I get
"one of the words is too short"
"one of the words is too long"
or it just doesn't find the thread for absolutely no reason.

The only useful thing is the search by user name so you can find posts you have posted in.

They speak for themselves.
Rant over

All those quotes are from the freestyle thread right?

I do agree with your rant though. :)

and another thread revival..... :D

Just wondering, if it would be more helpful to the forum if Mods just closed threads rather than deleted them, where possibe?

E.g. I just posted the Hitler Cats, which I asked to be closed after I was told it was a repost. It was closed with 'not again' as the comment which is fair enough as it has been posted before.

To be fair, I did do a search though before I posted it, but as I assume the others have been deleted too, there's no record of them - probably someone else will come along tomorrow, search, find nothing and post it again.

If the offending thread was just closed, rather than deleted, am I right in thinking it would still show on a search? Are only inappropriate threads deleted? After all, no-one wants to have the horror of reeeeeeepost or WTLW all over their threads! :D

*waits for this thread to be locked/deleted now* :p

What would be nice is, when you submit a story to say digg.com it searches for duplicate entries; if it finds them it shows you the stories and you can choose whether to continue submitting or not. It would be nice if vBulletin had it.
