Have recently finished making a site for a friend who is a music teacher in a high school - as it's only 3 weeks old, it's ranks quite well for all the target long tail phrases (and very well for local keywords) - all for several keywords.

He got the IT technician (a colleague) to 'test and check' the site (wtf do IT technicians know about SEO or web development?) and the IT technician has said his site can't easily be found in Google - he typed in the nice and specific term 'music' and 'teacher'.

Now, with me not being an IT technician I wouldn't try and advise friends on things that technicians are much more well versed in than me.

The IT technician has 'advised me' to set meta keywords to get to number one in Google - for some stupidly competitive words, including 'music' - his reasoning is that the site is related to music, so should appear number one when someone types in 'music'. SEO is obviously just a case of typing in a few search terms in a (now not used) meta tag. gah!

Why can't people just stick to what they're good at and butt out basically?

I've just finished a 25 minute call to the music teacher explaining all the ins and outs and why the IT technician has no idea what he's talking about basically

Just felt the need to rant a bit.

Thanks for listening :)

Some folk just can't/don't/won't understand SEO.

I can understand where you are coming from. I have completed websites for customers who once they have looked at their spanky new website say "Wow!!!...That looks awesome!!!", then a week later phone you up and ask "Why can't I see my website on page 1 of Google???!!!".

/slaps forehead

Google and the main search engines don't even use meta keywords anymore do they?

Isn't it in the job description of most school IT technicians that they should appear to know everything? :P No offence to any school techies on the board of course :)

And I believe Google doesn't use meta keywords, but uses the description.

Was the music teacher successfully convinced?

I've had to work with die-hard-technical-types-gone-SEO-for-the-money in the past (obviously you can do both, but they couldn't), and it was painful to read their 'SEO reports' (Google analytics print-outs).

He was only worried about it as the technician mentioned it :) After I gave him a list of several frequently searched terms where his site ranks very well he was happy - he actually having a cms type thing next month :)
