Rant: Twitter

There's a difference between someone saying they hope a fad dies out and wanting a service to die.

But don't let that get in the way of your eagerness to post a sarcastic reply.

Noticed in the local rag even the local constabulary are on twitter now, what on earth is the point :/

Anything worthwhile they do, it'll be in the paper anyway, they're just jumping on the bandwagon like everyone else cos it's 'cool'.

They'll be able to reach a lot of more people using Twitter. I'm pretty sure more teenagers, students, young adults have Twitter accounts than buy the local newspaper.

Just an example:

http://twitter.com/SpursITK

I've set that up because, as anyone who has used a football forum at this time of year, it's users want to know what's happening, all the time.

I've added several RSS feeds to it and they can either follow it online, have it all on one RSS desktop widget, or have the latest updates sent directly to their mobile.

What isn't good about that?

Nothing, it's just RSS was first and is a zillion times better. It just doesn't have the web2 name and all the cool kidz using it.

What happens to the people who are not capable of setting up a website/RSS feed, but need to update a group of people? Surely this is the best way. Hosted with someone else, who will pay for the bandwidth and storage and will work to keep it online for free. Plus is very simple to sign-up, and it can be updated from a website, 3rd party desktop applications, text message or a mobile applications.

One still wonders exactly how on earth Twitter plan to make any money whatsoever :/

Ohh I read about their business plan. It was leaked into the press about a month ago. They were quite deluded from what I remember. Something about having 1 billion users by 2012 and make several billion pounds year. I think they plan on charging companies but can't quite remember. I know they advertise on their Chinese version though. Like Bebo was in 2005, myspace in 2006 and facebook in 2007 it's a fad and will be superseded by something.

It is also really good for links as google rate Twitter stupidly highly, so start pluging your site :)
